Is there an age restriction for this team? Or just college players? Pivec being on the team suggests the latter, but it’s interesting that some of the bigger seniors aren’t, like CD, Ionescu, etc.

No age restrictions. Four years ago Canada's Sr Nat'l team played and won. Canada hosted the event so Team Canada was motivated to win and did behind a remarkable game by Kia Nurse.

But it is a developmental thing. We generally do quite well. I remember seeing the team some years back at their semi-open scrimmages with Brazil and ?, along with University Games team. Probably about 2007? The coach of the Pan Am team was Jim Foster, Cappie was on University team, various UConn folks (perhaps on both teams?). Geno, among a few others, were in the audience of maybe 50 to 100 spectators. As I said, "semi-public".

Looking at the original 35 participants, some interesting names among those who didn't make it.

Te'a Cooper (TBD/Powder Springs, Ga.),
Chelsea Dungee (Arkansas/Sapulpa, Okla.),
Dana Evans(Louisville/Gary, Ind.),
Kiah Gillespie (Florida State/Meriden, Conn.),
Vivian Gray (Oklahoma State/Argyle, Texas),
Becca Hittner (Drake/Urbandale, Iowa),
Joyner Holmes (Texas/Cedar Hill, Texas),
Stephanie Jones (Maryland/Havre de Grace, Md.),
Aari McDonald(Arizona/Fresno, Calif.),
Karissa McLaughlin (Purdue/Fort Wayne, Ind.),
Amber Melgoza (Washington/Santa Barbara, Calif.),
Ayana Mitchell(Louisiana State/Conyers, Ga.),
Erica Ogwumike(Rice/Cypress, Texas),
Eleah Parker(Pennsylvania/Charlotte, N.C.),
Jaelynn Penn (Indiana/Louisville, Ky.),
Destiny Pitts (Minnesota/Detroit, Mich.),
Jayla Scaife (Dayton/Muncie, Ind.),
Kristin Scott (Iowa State/Kasson, Minn.),
Destiny Slocum (Oregon State/Meridian, Idaho),
Amber Smith (Missouri/Shreveport, La.),
Sug Sutton (Texas/St. Louis, Mo.),
Kobi Thornton (Clemson/Shellman, Ga.),
Kay Kay Wright (UCF/Orlando, Fla.).

I'm most surprised at Dungee, McDonald and Slocum not making the team, but that's just a quick look without factoring position depth.

Team USA has participated in 16 PanAm games and won 7 gold medals, the most recent in 2007.

Some of the big scorers for not great teams (Dungee, Melgoza, McDonald, Gray, etc.) did not make the team, but some of the players on not great teams who you don’t hear a lot about (Pulliam, Brewer, Williams) did make it.

Yet again, you could field a second team that I think would be very competitive with the first.

Could not have been an easy process to de-select some of these individuals. There are some very talented players that did not make the 12-member team. I was very happy to see Mikayla Pivec getting the national attention she deserves and has earned. She is a gamer.

With so many WNBA cuts or players out of the league, I don't know why Team USA doesn't attempt to get some of these players on the Pan Am Team. It would provide the team with some older players that are more experienced in international play.

What exactly would the pro players get out of playing in a meaningless tournament in Lima, Peru? Nothing aside from a free trip to Lima.

What exactly would USA Basketball get out of playing some pro players who will never play for the senior national team? Would these players increase the chances of winning gold? Probably not. Might as well treat the PanAm games as an opportunity to develop some young talent which is what USA Basketball is doing.
