Paige: Off-Ball Movement: Back-Cutting and Scoring at Baylor

It is one of her many skills that often gets overlooked. Watching Paige move without the ball is literally a clinic on how to get open. One play stands out this past season.

Late in OT of the SC game, Paige gets the ball into Liv for what could have been a 15’ jumper. Liv hesitates and the SC defense closes on her. In the meantime, Paige moved back and over to the 3-pt line to give Liv a passing outlet, just in case. Liv gets the ball back to Paige as the shot clock is about to expire and Paige fires up a shot that will forever be known as “The Bounce.”

If Paige doesn’t move without the ball, Liv has no passing outlet and she either has to throw up a contested shot or UConn gets hit with a shot clock violation. Subsequently, SC would only have needed a 2-pt shot to win the game rather than being down 4 pts.

So @oldude the happiest person in the building when "The Bounce" went in was Liv 'cuz she really booted the play which was intended to be her rising and firing. But she didn't want the shot and moved toward the basket and to the right, aiding the defense closing on her.

As for the video its one of very many which illustrate how sophisticated Paige's game is. Some think she just has a raw, native talent. Nope. She's studied the game and practiced endless hours.

I wrote the following after the Providence January 9th game regarding Paige nice to see that so many are just now catching up.

If they were giving out PHDs in the UCONN offense then the might as well award Paige a PHD right now. Remarkable growth in her understanding of the read and react UCONN offense and how to become a Shot Hunter Deluxe. As a benchmark it took KLS a full season to get to this level of understanding of how to hunt shots. The key to being a shot hunter in the UCONN offense is to be constantly working towards the ball.
This is how you draw it it up when teaching read and react, this is what you show kids about how to back cut when overplayed and post up when you have a size advantage or when to break off a cut because you already have the defense beat.

Karma. She didn’t get the foul call and was drafted by a team with a full roster.
The shove was bad but the full arm swipe was really egregious! I have to think Paige might have been injured if that had connected. Looks as though Carrington was having a hard time dealing with Paige’s dominance in that game. Karma indeed!

That shove by Carrington....
yea honestly never noticed how many cheap shots Paige takes, can see why she was talking smack after a 3 in the Baylor game. There was another game vs Georgetown where off an in bound she just got throw down for no reason.
