No. 2 UConn Beats No. 1 South Carolina in OT Thriller as Paige Bueckers Drops 31

South Carolina's 12-game win streak is no more after the top-ranked Gamecocks suffered a 63-59 overtime defeat to No. 2 UConn on Monday night at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut.

Paige Bueckers has lived up to the hype as a true freshman, and her legend continues to grow. The 5'11" guard displayed a level of poise belying her years, posting a game-high 31 points along with six steals, five assists and four rebounds.

Bueckers put the finishing touches on the victory with a three-point heave as the shot clock wound down with 10.8 seconds left in overtime.

Paige Bueckers took over at the perfect time for No. 2 UConn on Monday night.

Bueckers, after a late South Carolina rally forced overtime in their marquee matchup at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut, drilled seven straight points – including a clutch contested 3-point bucket — in the final seconds to give the Huskies a 63-59 win over the top-ranked Gamecocks.

Paige being the first w/3 consecutive 30-point games is crazy when you think about some of the legendary players that have come through this program.
She is phenomenal and deservedly so. However, in defense of some of our past phenoms, Geno would purposfully bench his phenoms because they where on dominating teams and destroying the opponents. I would say todays UConn team needs PB to play more minutes. Still..... only her 14th game and how effortless and on, and on. Paige is special. [ edit: this observation applies to other great non-UConn players ]

Paige is averaging 16.42 shots a game, is hitting 9.3 a game and has a 23.35 point game average. Is also averaging 5.2 RBDS, 6 ASTS, and 3 STLS a game. Today's game was the first time she shot above 20 attempts and she was 14 for 26.

One of the most amazing things about these stats is that she worked so hard for each shot. She ran around screens and then back out to the ball all game. She also played amazing defense anticipating SC offense and stealing the ball. Yet she doesn't seem to get tired. What a competitor.

Paige Bueckers, Jalen Suggs star on magical night for Minnesota basketball

Bueckers scored the final 13 points to lead UConn to an overtime win over South Carolina in a game between the top two women's teams in the nation. Later, Suggs led men's No. 1 Gonzaga with 24 points as the Zags raised their record to 19-0.

putting aside her play on the court, PB is bringing back an excitement to UConn basketball that's been missing for the past few years..............when Azzi Fudd joins the party UConn will be the most enjoyable WBB team to watch in quite some time........the implications for future recruiting are also immense........

Regarding PB's final 3, I was struck by how it happened. With the shot clock running down, Paige knew she had to hoist up the ball w/out hesitation. That's how aware she was/is of what's happening on the court. Contrast that with the end of the Arkansas game with CW standing in her backcourt trying to figure out what was going on while seconds rolled away. Her lack of understanding foreclosed any last minute shot by the Huskies.

Future recruiting, beyond the class of 2022, is largely going to be dictated by the program's succession plan. Some of the players on the team now, or those arriving in a few months, may very well be greeting a coach other than Geno at center court on their senior day.

perhaps but as long as his health is good I don't see Geno leaving before graduates.............he's going to be having way too much fun........ the odds may be pretty good that the next UConn coach is already sitting on the bench......

He's stated he didn't like inactivity during the covid period. So, as you stated, he's likely going to want to coach for a while.
