Paige Bueckers is who we thought she was.
  • Despite playing on one of the weakest rosters in the WNBA with a rookie coach, she is rolling to the tune of 17.7 points per game on 47.2% shooting with 5.7 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game while only turning the ball over 2.3 times per game.
  • Only Allisha Gray and Erica Wheeler have higher shooting percentages among guards.
  • Only four players have more assists per game.
  • Only one player has more steals per game (Gabby Williams).
High efficiency. Playing smart basketball. Impacting every possession on both ends of the floor.

What I find most remarkable about PB’s play is her high assist to turnover stat. The pro game is so much faster, physical and long than the college game. PB has adjusted incredibly well. My recollection is that CC had 3 times the turnover rate her rookie year.

I’ve seen all of her games with the wings so far. As good as she’s doing I think she could be doing better. She’s missing shots she normally makes , some of her turnovers are unforced. My intent isn’t to be super critical. My hypothesis is she’s battling fatigue. She’s been playing nonstop since Nov. so I think this is something she’s going to be battling for the rest of the season.
The same thing happened with CC last year she played much better after the 1 month Olympic break.

It's interesting, watching Paige's games and seeing the different types of turnovers (Paige standards vs virtually all point guards - and, certainly, all rookie point guards - are very, very different).
She will occasionally make a truly bad pass. Some of these are miscommunications between her and an intended target; others are the result of forcing the ball inside to a big who is double or triple teamed, or who has stone hands and hasn't established positioning.
She will occasionally miss on a home run pass (probably under the mistaken assumption that Aubrey is the target and will haul in a pass on the dead run).
She can lose her footing (& the ball) when blitzed or if she misreads the double or triple team that quickly develops when penetrating.
She has (I believe) one traveling call and one (badly called IMO) charge.
My point is: even though her assist/turnover ratio is below the 3 to 1 gold standard, she is still comfortably above 2 to 1, and she should be able to to be more and more efficient as she learns to read defensive tactics more rapidly, continues to be more in tune with the tendencies of her teammates and, hopefully, to be helped out more by her teammates when she is being trapped.
When everything is considered, she has been terrific thusfar and should only continue to get better.

She's still leading the league in turnovers in year 2, but probably not headed for another single season record. Only leading by 35% over second place instead of 50%

Clark has the same turnover rate right now as last year (5.6 a game) despite slightly fewer minutes. She actually leads Angel Reese by a hair more than she led Alyssa Thomas last year. Her assists are up a bit so far.

I've watched all 8 games Clark has played and there are 3 or 4 turnovers a game that should have been assists that the player didn't catch the ball or blew the layup...it reminds me when DT came to Uconn and Geno told the team to keep their head up or the ball will hit them in the head

Agree with all but have to also agree with what David54 added in an earlier post about Paige has been playing non-stop for a long time and a needed respite from the responsibility of having to drive the offense on a team that is unfortunately still in the WIP stage would be more than helpful.

Why are her assists not so high yet? you ask...

Her teammates who shoot the most (so far) average around 33% shooting (2 pts) and 29% (3 pts). Now that a woman from China (Li) who wants to play more minutes is starting at Center and played 34 mins in the last game vs. the Dream (10-5) and Haley Jones has joined the team (not played yet), Paige may have a couple of women who shoot closer to 50%. Can't get an assist if the ball does go through the hoop.

Hopefully, the Wings win the first one at home (Friday vs. Fever, 7-7), as back-to-back games are difficult as the Wings play again on Saturday vs. Washington, 7-8. However, if the Wings can win this upcoming three game home-stand, they will improve to 5-5 at home. "Hope springs eternal!"

Go Paige!!!

I don’t recall Haley Jones being a high percentage shooter. (I know you didn’t say “high” but as I recall, Haley’s shooting percentage was pretty poor at Stanford. I haven’t followed her W career but as far as I know, it did not improve significantly in the W. I could be misremembering of course. I am quite old.

Read the other day she's the fastest player to get to 200 points. A neat piece of trivia.

You are not misremembering:

I am working under the impression that Haley never have Paige as her teammate, and this stint could be her opportunity to "re-invent" herself as a small forward/Wing, as Maddie is out for the season. Her 50% of 3's must be 1 of 2 or 3 of 6, as she has only scored 9 pts on the season (5 games played) and has NO made free throws.

As far as know, Haley hasn’t even hit the floor yet for the Wings. I believe that she is just here for the hardship period. The coach is screwing up by not playing her at all because who knows, she might surprise some people. Just look at Ari McDonald, began as hardship but now has an end of year contract. I was never a fan of Haley, but what do the Wings have to lose?
