Pac 12 games 2/2/18

Stanford is on a 17-2 run. McPhee has scored 6 quick points. Timeout OSU. 45-36. Wow this one is getting away in a hurry.

47-40 after 3Q. OSU is usually a good rebounding team, but Stanford got one O board after another in the quarter and whole bunch of 2nd chance points. That's what turned the game around.

Tudor is invisible. Still scoreless, didn't even get a shot attempt in the quarter. I'm not quite sure how Stanford has been able to blanket her, while still double and even occasionally triple teaming Gulich at all times. Maybe they have 7 or 8 players on the floor?

To my eye Stanford is doing a couple things. 1. O boards. 2. Pressuring Pivec. I love her game but she isn’t a PG. Oregon State isn’t helping by missing 3’s. Has Corosdale hit any??

I’ve tried to watch PAC12 basketball...I really have! But I can’t do it for anything more than small doses. The conference seems to be afflicted with a stunning lack of ability to score...and it’s not like the conference has a great reputation for tough defense. Outside of Oregon and occasionally UCLA or Oregon State most the conference struggles to put up points. The Stanford/OSU game may not get out of the 50’ or low 60’s. Worse yet, the lack of rhythm and fluidity to the offenses causes surprise when they do score.

OSU is incapable of grabbing a D board. Unbelievable.

Corosdale has been brutal tonight. Pivec is practically the only Beav to score in the second half.

and it’s not like the conference has a great reputation for tough defense.

OSU, Stanford and Arizona St. have been playing stingy defense for years.

OSU finally got a little momentum, then give up yet another O board and 2nd chance point. That is just killing them in the 2nd half. 54-47, 4:50 left.

Kalmer w/ a nice boost w/ 12 off the bench. Doesn't make up for Tudor and Corosdale doing nothing and Gulich having a way below average game. Can't have 3 out of 5 starters play badly and expect to win.

Arizona State, yes. OSU only the last couple of years, Stanford hasn’t had really good defensive teams in awhile, but the conference as a whole is not strong defensively.

56-51 2:50 left, McPhee going to the line.

OSU has won the conference 3 years in a row, largely because of their defense. Including this year that's 4 years of good D.

Was 57-54, but Stanford got 2 O boards on 1 possession, finally got a hoop. I cannot ever remember seeing a Rueck team rebound so poorly.

Isn’t that what I said?

You said a couple years. That means two to me.

Also disagree w/ you about Stanford. They've been able to shut the opponent's water off w/ their D for several years now.

59-57 OSU possession, 19.4 seconds left.

I don’t think there’s a substantive difference between 3 and the colloquial expression “a couple of”.

Gulich missed a contested layup (terrible game from her). Stanford ball, 14.3 seconds left.

Sniezek shooting FTs. 13.5 left. Missed the first.

Missed em both, Smith with an O board. That's about a thousand of those tonight. Complete failure by OSU rebounding tonight. Absolutely gave the game away.

But Stanford only hit 1 of 2, OSU still has a chance. 60-57 w/ 7.7 sec. left.

Stanford only 6-12 from the FT line. "Only" 17 O boards, seems like a lot more than that. Most of them have been in the 2nd half.

OSU threw the inbound pass at midcourt right to Stanford. Couldn't catch up w/ them to foul, dribbled out the clock. Fitting terrible end to the game for a very forgettable game for OSU. Good win for Stanford, tough D from them.

ASU up 39-16 at halftime. I'm actually starting to kinda hope that Neighbors does terrible at Arkansas. A bit of karma for leaving the cupboard so bare on his way out the door.

Never underestimate Tara's ability to scheme defensively. She's a wizard.

A very important road win for Stanford. They're in the top 20 of the RPI and — if they can win a few more big games, and depending on what happens with other teams — they have a shot at a hosting spot in the NCAAs.

For the Beavers, a very costly loss. Their nonconference SOS was disastrously weak, and they need to win some games to boost their RPI. Immediately after this loss to Stanford, their RPI tumbled from #38 to #52. If not for that overtime win over Oregon, OSU would be in danger of missing the tournament right now.

Not sure OSU being in danger of missing the NCAA tournament. However, it was a terrible loss for OSU tonight. I was at the game, and Stanford wanted this game more than OSU, or, Stanford seem to believe more than OSU. OSU's inability to simply box out on Stanford's basket was the difference. Rueck has made some strange decisions in the past 6-7games. Not giving Taylor Kalmer many more minutes is baffling. He had Kalmer on the bench for their last possession when they needed a 3. His underclassman (minus Pivec) played like underclassman tonight. Rueck went to a zone defense in the 4th quarter, and it was a disaster. In my mind, he got schooled tonight by Tara. Oh well, on to the next game.
