From what I've read it's inevitable that the P5 are going to get autonomy to set new rules that only apply to their schools, including rules that allow them to give more benefits to their student athletes.

Seems to me this is a death sentence for everyone on the outside looking in. I don't care how awesome KO is, if you have Coach K and Calipari and Donovan and Crean and Izzo and on and on offering you not only an education but also better competition and better benefits, it's gonna be very difficult to get elite talent to UConn. And that's for basketball, forget about football at that point.

Just seems like another instance of these schools taking their ball and going home. "Oh we can't beat you on the court? Well we'll just change the rules off the court and make it so you can't really compete. Then we'll see."

Even if UConn were part of one of the P5, this would still seem scummy.

Well, it ain't good.

And I'm with you. When UConn gets into a P5 conference, I'm not going to think any differently about the cartel like nature of a group within a group annointing themselves as better than the rest, and claiming the majority of the revenue. Non profit my ass. Tax exempt? Okay, but not non profit.

One thing I never understood about that whole idea is that if a bunch of P5 schools decide to up and leave how do all of the P5 schools feel safe? For instance why bring a school like Northwestern with you if you are forming a new set of conferences? Or Wake Forest? I get there are traditional rivalries but those seem to be going by the wayside anyway. Why wouldn't the P5 (or the actual power schools therein) cut dead weight?

At this point any change is better than none. The P5 knows it can't just breakaway. What they will do is set up a structure where only certain schools can compete financially.

Ultimately, I think a few current P5 schools won't be able to cut it. UConn and a few others will meet any requirements that the P5 schools can meet. This creates more realignment which is what we want.

I'm skeptical that either the ACC or B1G will expand again without some external incentive.

From what I understand, though, schools outside of the P5 won't be permitted to compete with the new benefits that the P5 are offering, even if they could handle it financially. We'll still be held to the same draconian rules that are in place now.

The P5 would be permitted to change the rules to make recruiting easier for them and only them.

Can this thread just be moved to the CR board (or merged with a similar thread there)? People come to the basketball board for basketball news and discussion...and to get away from the crappy reality of CR.

I just hope the P5 are counting on my money (from tv, etc). They will be sadly disappointed.

More knowledgable people than me on this board (like businesslawyer) have already noted that such restrictions would have to get past a lot of lawsuits before going into effect. And it doesn't sound likely that they would.

The P5 only need the votes of the P5 from now on. While UConn and the AAC needs the votes of the other 21 mid majors? seems like is The NCAA and not the P5 thats trying to tie the AAC hands.

Seriously I think UConn would be better off as an Independent, have it's own TV deal schedule whoever they want park the Olympic sports somewhere close to CT maybe the NEC conference?

UConn has 3 revenue sports programs UConn womens program bring more revenue then the majority of football schools in the mid majors. The women can schedule the dukes,ND, NC,Stanford,Baylors the Tennesse's all the marquee teams in one season that has to be big for TV, The men can schedule 5 games against every conference in the power 5 some of those games against the NC, Arizona, Kansas, MSU, Florida, Kentucky and against Georgetown, Villanova at MSG thats has to be big for TV. The football program can schedule some of the bigger programs to play in NYC.

I honestly believe UConn can get a far better TV deal and make a whole lot of money by being independent then by sticking around in mid major conference.

There is a nuance here that is being missed. The P5 won't be able to decide who can or can not play by the P5 rule simply through conference affiliation alone. That kind of exclusionary action would get them in all sorts of hot water legally and politically.

What they can do is advocate for a new set of rules for "big time sports" and change how they operate. Any school or group of schools would be able to do the same.

The question will be can these other schools fund these new ways of doing business and compete on the field with the P5. I think the answer is yes, at least for a while.

Step one: watch how many schools, supersize their training tables to the level of places like Google. A D1 player won't have to spend a dime on food and will probably make a few bucks selling access to the place or candy bars out the side door.

I don't see how going independent is in any way feasible for UConn. I'm sure it's difficult enough as it is getting a couple interesting OOC matchups in football every year. Imagine if we had to build an entire schedule like that.

As for basketball, the AAC actually isn't that bad all things considered, even without Ville.

ergo ... ipso facto

There are a whole bunch of people more knowledgeable & capable in explaining Legal issues than me (ahem ... look at my mistakes). But, what has always raised my eyebrows on this ... is the P5 never seem to give a flying frank about the Title IX issues. If you are setting up this elite club ... and leaving out women - including the DOMINANT brand in WBB - I think you are on your way to some lawsuits.

Further, as I know from my work, the USFs & UCFs & Texas States of this world are marching on unobstructed. When you have 80,000 students enrolled at a school, how do you justify keeping them out while a 4000 Private is in? I don't think Cartels ever sustain their momentum. It just won't work in the long run.

Agree in basketball the AAC is pretty good Ville might be out but Houston and Temple will be better bringing more depth. In football AAC is to me at least better then Big East was when UConn first joined as their more depth and more potential. I just worry that the other mid majors will do whatever they can to hold back the AAC therefor holding UConn back.

The AAC is already committed to hanging with the P5, our conference will pay stipends if they come about. If you waste half a brain cell today worrying about garbage like this you must live a charmed life and have very little real world things to worry about.

Let's take a second and consider that we're posting on a college basketball message board on the internet at 11:00 on a Tuesday. Most of us are probably doing ok in the "real world things to worry about" department.

For me UCONN sports is a source of enjoyment, other people seem committed to making it a source of worry and misery.

Aresco has stated that the AAC will match the stipends that the larger conferences give out.

You do have over 3500 posts just on this version the the boneyard, right?

The AAC is going to be pretty good in Football too! The problem is not the teams. The problem is the MONEY! 20-25 Million vs. $2,000,000 is the problem. Everyone makes fun of CUSA but teams like UCF, Tulsa, East Carolina, Houston and Cincinnati hold their own against most of the P5 schools. Navy is usually a solid team. Then there is UCONN, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, USF and Temple. All decent programs that are attempting to take it up a few notches. I agree with Mike Aresco when he talks about how this conference will improve. No question UCONN needs more revenue to compete day in and day out with the bigs!

From what I understand it will be optional by conference.
It will be expensive. That would be prohibiting factor.
You might see the Top leftovers from the WAC ,AAC,and maybe some others will merge.
If it's not optional it's never going to fly.

Does anyone honestly think it'll take more than a couple years for the SEC to poach either/both FSU and Miami?

Miami is a dumpster fire. No way the SEC wants a small private school whose best years are 20 years in the rearview mirror

Realistically like 10, but the b1g clamored dor nebraska given worse circumstances.

Nebraska is a large state universty. Miami is BC with sunshine.

I feel bad that you think Nebraska is a more marketable football school than miami.

Doom and gloom for a 4 time national championship program, quit feeling sorry.

I'm pretty sure FSU and Miami have no chance at going to the SEC. I think SLive has stated last CR go around, that he doesn't want any more schools within the same state, i.e. expand the footprint of the SEC. Plus I think Florida would have something to say about either or both of those schools joining.

Miami is a tiny school with a miniscule alumni base, diminishing fan base that doesn't come close to selling out their home games. When it comes to assessing value to college athletic departments they aren't in the same stratosphere As Nebraska. Look for Miami to continue to fall down this list as time goes on
