Over/Under: Thread bickering

What's the consensus on the number of replies to a thread before it becomes personal and/or bickering about minutiae? Sometimes this place feels like the Middle East and we are bickering over a goat five generations old.
I am getting back to the board after a few years hiatus... I've got to say it's good to see that some things don't change.
And another question, are we getting worse as the season goes into the dumper?
