Here’s Dan O’s post

I saw so many Reddit, IG and X posts saying Dan O should be considered for HC. My replies, of course, is that there is no substitute for coaching experience.
Wonder if Dan O would ever consider taking a QB/offensive assistant job to get his feet wet...not sure what he's being paid by ESPN, but he might prove to be valuable on the sidelines.

Great read - worth the time:

-> First, Benedict simply wanted to see Candle coach. So on Saturday, Nov. 29, four days after Jim Mora announced he was departing for Colorado State, Benedict traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to watch Toledo face Central Michigan in its regular season finale. It was a blustery, cold, snowy day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

“He didn’t know I was there, and it wasn’t meant for him to know I was there,” Benedict said Saturday by phone, hours after UConn announced Candle as its next coach. “It was nice being at a football game where I didn’t have a rooting interest, per se. My main focus was on his movements, watching him interact with his players, watching his players interact with his other coaches, watching the organization on the sideline. I wasn’t there to evaluate his offensive or defensive schemes. I was there to take it all in. I primarily focused on him. I watched him more than I was watching the game.” <-

-> … “One of, if not the, most important thing I do is hire head coaches,” Benedict said. “I take this role and responsibility extremely seriously. Not that any previous search or any search is easy, but this cycle within college football, I don’t know if it’s unprecedented, but certainly there was a lot going on relative to coaching movement. That put even more of a premium and probably more pressure on the situation for me to have a good result. I have been doing nothing other than trying to find and identify who that next leader was going to be. My first intuition about this search as we quickly started building a list of candidates was to go see Jason Candle. I went and saw Jason Candle.” <-

From the AD DB Article. I was curious why AD Dave zeroed in on HC Candle in the first place. This isn't like, let's go hire the biggest name we can get and hope for the best. This is a very deliberate strategy. I also like how the folks in Toledo put up a billboard thanking their former HC Candle. A very different response than what most coaches get, including our former hc. That says a lot.

"Benedict was a guest of Central Michigan AD Amy Folan, a 1996 UConn graduate and a former Huskies’ soccer player. He was accompanied by a colleague he didn’t want to name, someone he met during the 2021 search that ended with Mora’s hiring and has remained close with since. Benedict kept his eyes fixed on Candle, how he moved, how he interacted, how he carried himself on the sideline."

“He had a lot more questions than I did for him,” Benedict said. “His track record is very public. Talking to people around college football in all different areas — coaches or media or data analytics people — I never found anyone who didn’t have great things to say about Coach Candle. When you connect those dots and look at what he’s accomplished — and it’s a lot deeper than wins and losses — I didn’t have a lot of questions for him. It was more about what he needed to learn about us. I think the majority of that rested primarily on the commitment to our football program moving forward.”

"I think the last four years were a great start and Coach Candle, I think, is going to be that leader, that visionary, that is going to take it to the next level.”

I hope he kicks A even if for a short time. I always wonder who else he considers and talks to. I remember Warde wanted Narduzzi but he wasn’t interested. Also remember plane going to Muncie for Lembo.

Im fascinated to know who this colleague is

I'm happy there is so much optimism about this hire. It's good to hear.

But I've been through a lot of these in a lot of sports. And tomorrow is always a mystery. So I will hope for the best as well, but I don't have any expectations until I see what is on the field.

lol, read what the women’s board says about Geno when the team ekes out a measly 20 point win
I'm thoroughly convinced that Geno is the best sports coach of all time in all sports combined. Better than Wooden, better than Rockne, better than Lombardi, better than Dorrance, better than them all.

In 20 years (if I'm still around), I'm gonna look back with such pride that he was here and I was here with him...

Similar to Geno recruiting HS players, sometimes what happens off the field/court is equally important that on. How players comport themselves on the bench, are they supportive of teammates, are they engaged and focused? A person could be having a mess of success as a coach, however if they are not a good person, don't know their players (Kelly), or act like fools (Kiffin), then maybe they aren't cut out to be UCHC. AD David Benedict has been and is continuing to build a strong athletic program for whatever comes in 2030 (ish).
