Hugh O'Brien passed away at 91. He played Wyatt Earp in the 'first adult western' [according to an article I read] back in the 1950's. The writer said that prior TV westerns [Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy] were meant for children. Uhh...Have Gun, Will Travel...would follow. Wire Paladin, San Franciso!

And a couple of days after the premier of Wyatt Earp came the CBS premier of Gunsmoke staring James Arness. Guess which onehad the longest run.

Speaking of Wyatt Earp:

Square jawed handsome, great voice and a crack shot when needed. What more could a preteen in the 50s-early 60s want: A two holster gunslinger rig (with tie downs) and two chrome cap pistols! RIP hero of my childhood RIP.

Speaking of Wyatt Earp, here's a question about two modern movies; Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Who was a better Earp - Costner or Russell? If you could combine all of the actors from these two for a third movie, who would you choose to play the various parts....Doc, the brothers, Ringo, Wyatt's main squeeze, etc.?

Somewhere I read that John Wayne turned down an offer to play Marshal Dillon in Gunsmoke and then recommended
James Arness for the part. Nice networking for Arness!

Russel beat Costnet, hands down, or up.

Long before Dirty Harry made the .44 Magnum iconic, TV's Wyatt Earp showed us the Buntline Special. Western historians still debate whether he actually carried it and used it...or whether it was kept by him as a presentation/curiosity piece.

Wyatt ERP---died sometime in the 30's.
Didn't Gunsmoke come prior to ERP??
You missed a REAL Cowboy Autry and an ERP actor that was raised in Cowboy country James Garner, when he was born Norman Okla was real cowboy country--

As a kid, I always thought that Wire was an odd name for a man. Had it actually been his name, I would still think it odd!

Arness had a brother who had a long and varied run as well. "Mr. Phelps, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions." (Poooof)

I believe the first TV western was Hopalong Cassidy, which were basically reshowings of his B movies of the forties. In 1959, there were 26 Prime time Westerns on air!

Which raises the question: What's the difference between Brave, Courageous, and Bold?

Russell. But Val Kilmer playing Doc Holiday was my favorite.

He also had a classic role as Captain Oveur:

In 1955, Peter Graves starred in the Saturday morning Western FURY.

As my tastes matured, or turned darker, Paladin with Richard Boone really appealed to me to.
