Last night I watched the WVAU vs DUKE WBB game and it turned out to be one of the most exciting, dramatic, games I've seen in a long, long time!
Duke was up 2 points at the 1/2, but in the last 2 or 3 seconds a fight broke out and all of WVAU's bench ran on to the court!
It took the refs 20 minutes to sort things out then they began 1/2 time!
One Duke girl was thrown out for fighting, one WVAU girl out for the same fight!
The kicker was all 6 WVAU bench players were thrown out for leaving their bench area!
Leaving WVAU just 5 players to play the complete 2nd half!
Their center (from France) got her 4th foul early in the 4th period and finished the game!
Duke got close in the 4th but WVAU rallied and pulled it out, 57 to 49!
It was played at a WVA resort holding 1,200 people mostly WVA fans, who went crazy at the end!!
If you can find it on Youtube or whatever you got to watch it!

One WVU player remained on the bench; otherwise, they would have had only four eligible players. The Duke player who instigated the fight should be kicked off the team; that was total bush league.

The venue was the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs, WV. The Greenbrier held the 1979 Ryder Cup, won by the US squad and a ten year site for a PGA event, The Greenbrier Classic. Sam Snead had connections to the property.
WV has interesting geography. (Remember WV was once a part of VA) The eastern part is reasonably close to DC. My cousin took the train every morning from Shepherdstown to the Lib of Congress. The Greenbrier is a "mountain resort", just over the Blue Ridge from Serah Williams VA, where I went to school in Lexington. The Homestead Resort is a "sister" resort in VA to the Greenbrier in WV.
There's also a Men's Thanksgiving tournament at the Greenbrier- Butler, Northwestern, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Should Duke be struggling like this?

Guessing this is an auto correct typo? 😉

It should be both her and the WV player because it takes two to tango if players were to get kicked off of their teams. Woods did taunt, but the player from WV was the one who pushed first. Had she opted to let it go and walk off at half time, Woods would have been the only player tagged with a technic foul for taunting.

Not a fan of either team, but also not a fan of trash-talk nor "intimidating". For both teams it's well that this happened early in the season -- it's a lesson in "keep your butt OFF the floor" in such an event. NCAA rule -- you WILL be kicked out of the game. They'll remember, maybe.

my main thought: it's time to reassess kara's head coaching abilities.

she was a great announcer though. maybe she should have stuck with that..
Newsflash: She's our Olympic coach.
How many times has Geno described Olympic coach as the hardest job ever. He said, they don't give parades for silver or bronze medals. Oh crap, something's got to give with her, hopefully it's not the Olympic team.

Well…: she the next coach for the US team. I hope she isn’t the one to end the streak

There is a VERY good post-game presser of the West
Virginia H.C. The W. V. coach was well spoken describing
the "resilience, grit, and guts" of his 5 remaining players.
I also read the on-line article of the game
from BOTH the W. Virginia and Blue Demon sides. The
Duke version is VERY well written if you can find it.
Note: The comments from Kara Lawson on the DUKE
version.

Hell of a game. Hugely embarrassing loss for Duke. Their offense not only looks to be sub top 25, but I would say sub top 50. 49 total points against a team with only 5 players, some of the ones left were non-starters. And the score would have been worse for Duke if not for a pair of deep almost-logo 3-pointers late from Jackson.

Kudos to the WVU players, especially PG Shaw and backup center Riviere. Duke fans must be super disappointed. IMHO no way should Duke be ranked top 25 come next week. BTW with regards to the fight, from what I could see, the Duke player was much taller, blocked the shot, and the WVU player got pissed and forearm smacked the Duke player. I did not see where the fight was started by a Duke player.

Eric LA——-the Duke girl after the block was taunting the WVA girl that’s why she was kicked out! The WVA girl then hit her!

Not exactly. Woods did taunt, however she also pushed back after the WV player pushed her. To my knowledge, taunting doesn't usually trigger a flagrant two. Had the pushing not happened from either player, I think Woods would have only gotten a technical for the taunting.

Flipped on the game at the beginning of the 2nd half and couldn't understand, at first, how WV had only 5 players. Couldn't turn the game off after that. The WV 5 just played with an intensity that Duke just could not match, Nothing was more enjoyable than to see WV hold off Duke during their run in the last half of the fourth quarter. The big Frenchy was unstoppable, and didn't even play (much) of the first half. An unbelievable game, and Duke is simply not that good, yet!

You must be blind! Did you not see the in your face taunt, which would take incredible discipline for someone to ignore. The incident was entirely the fault of the Duke player, IMHO.

I do have a comment - you have to ignore it. This isn't the WWE. Ignore it and the Duke player gets a "T", WV gets a couple shots, and presumably there is no bench emptying. Historically, especially pre-replay and you still see it in other sports, the response gets noticed and the player gets away with the provocation.

This whole "chest-thumping" thing - which includes taunting and also acting like the play you just made (like breaking up a pass in the 1st quarter of a football game) won your team a championship. Can't stand that behavior - but certainly don't think players should be thrown off teams, either. You learn - or you will get thrown off for multiple violations.
