OT: World Cup Ratings

The USA-Belgium match drew a huge 15.0 rating in NYC, by far the highest mark anywhere in the country.

The next highest? You guessed it, Hartford/New Haven at 13.2.

Third was Washington, D.C at 12.8, followed by Richmond/Petersburg at 12.3, and Boston at 12.2.

World Cup is obviously not the same as college bball, but someone go tell the BIG about this. CT has ratings potential!

I'm amazed at the overall response to the World Cup in the US
As a fairly recent convert to soccer in 1982 .
I watched the finals at the community center of a large Connecticut Campground
Of the hundreds of people there,the only people who watched were a German women and myself.

I came from the Lower Naugatuck a Valley were football was huge.
I was a football,basketball,and baseball player.
When it came time for my son to choose a sport around 1980 we considered Pop warner.
Most of my former football teammates ,me included were limping around on bad knees.
My wife and I decided soccer was a better option.
I was hooked into coaching.
I'm a valley kid who would die rather than lose
So I learned everything about the game I could..
I ended up coaching for the next 15 years.
I coached my first bb team at 19 and soccer has many similarities to bb.

Wonder if that would translate into fans for a Hartford prosoccer team either in NASL or MLS.

NASL is at least being discussed right now. Hartford would have to show solid support before MLB gave us a look - but I do think the Northeast between Boston/CT/NYC could eve tally become like the Northwest.

1982 doesn't seem that long ago to me either. I was a freshman in high school. Seems like yesterday.

The first soccer game I watched on TV was in 1982 in my friend's basement in Ansonia on Univsion (no I did not speak Spanish) as his older brother played soccer at O'Brien Tech. I had been introduced to soccer as a 6 year old in Ansonia a year or two earlier playing at Warsaw Park. Thus, my first memory of professional soccer is this.



Of course, as I had been brought-up on Valley Football (Derby/Ansonia, Ansonia/Naugatuck, Derby/Shelton), I thought killing the opposing player on a breakaway was a good play. Thus, my initial love for German soccer.
