Surprised no thread started yet, these games have been insane. Nija trying to end the Oklahoma dynasty has been can’t miss TV.

Side note: mods I intended to put this in the general board and am unsure of how to move it, but fine to leave it here too if that’s preferred

I’ve always found softball/baseball to be somewhat dull but the WCWS this year has been wildly entertaining:
-Sooner magic is a real thing. 2 outs down 2, they hit a 3 run walk off homer vs Tennessee in the opening round

-Texas Tech beats UCLA after stealing home

-Tennessee/UCLA had an incredible ending that was controversial due to rule technicalities. Another 2 outs, bottom of the 7th situation that ended up being a homer.

-pretty sure there was another walk off home run game that I didn’t watch if someone wants to chime in on that

-Biggest story though is Texas Tech, led by Nijaree Canada upend 4x defending champs and home team Oklahoma. Oklahoma tied the game on an unreal 7th inning 2 run homer from their 9th hitter (who had 2 HR all year) going up against the best pitcher in softball.

All that said, Texas Tech advances to the title game less than a year after Canada famously transferred from Stanford to Texas Tech for a $1m NIL deal. Texas Tech didn’t even make the tournament last season. Nija’s been worth every penny and could be the Caitlin Clark of softball in terms of helping explode the sport’s popularity (and taking down Goliaths in the NCAA tournament).

Ironically, Tech’s next opponent is Texas, whose star pitcher went to high school with Caitlin Clark, and she used to get rides to HS basketball practice from Caitlin herself.

I’ve watched a ton of this season’s tournament primarily starting with South Carolina’s excellent season being picked dead last in the SEC after the hiring of a new coach to ending up earning the #8 seed. Sadly they were one out away in Game 2 from OKC but chucked it away. I’ve been rooting for TX Tech or Oregon to win the series so hopefully Canady and TT take UT down.

Softball far more entertaining and faster paced than baseball. I very much admire the defensive fielding prowess of these women.

.-.
NiJaree Canady!!!!

Stanford's women's sports continue to take Ls.

I watched the UT's play each other in the semis. Unbelievable that the Tennessee hitting coach would lose his mind enough to get ejected. Your team has a chance to go to the NCAA finals, and they are facing one of the best pitchers in the country, and you can't focus enough to help them find some hits. Instead, you lose your mind hollering at the ump about balls and strikes, get ejected, and Tennessee goes hitless from then on and lose 2-0. If I were the head coach, I'd tell him to back his bags as soon as their plane lands in Knoxville and not come back.

It had to be so mentally exhausting for Landry to face her former coach and many of her former teammates (that she admittedly loves) in the semi-final lose or go home game. Not to mention an opposing pitcher that has been the best in College Softball for the last three seasons. And don't forget, continue a 4 in a row championship legacy.
It was a great WCWS Finals and since I am an OU fan, don't have a favorite to win the championship. Texas has been a runner up many years so maybe it's their destiny.
But having to face NiJaree is a pretty tough obstacle.
And just like in WBB, watching the transfer portal entrants for about two more weeks is fun.

I was surprised that it took awhile for the women's college world series thread to popup. Glad that we got one started. Tons of great games over the past few weeks.

After years of going to women’s basketball regionals (and one Final Four!), we decided to take a chance on the College Softball World Series. We’ve been here since Thursday and it has been amazing. Multiple walkoff homers and hits. Tightly contested games and some absolutely outstanding plays. They have obviously got a system down from having the tournament in the same place every year and the venue is easy to access. The only downside is it is such a long tournament it would be hard to only come down here for part of it.

Now that the "home team" (I don't believe this) has been eliminated for the first time in a while, I am curious as to what the attendance will be like for the Championship Final. Hopefully it is like other sports and it has near capacity crowds.

Yeah the storylines are pretty nuts this year. Gotta feel for Landry--the announcers reported that she was planning to join Texas Tech prior to Nija committing there, but once Glasco found out that OU wanted her, he encouraged her to go there to train under their pitching staff since it's kind of a once in a life time opportunity to play for Patty Gasso.

Ticket prices are still holding well 1 day prior. Canady is a big time draw and it's a drivable distance for Longhorn fans, so I'm optimistic we'll see a solid turnout.

We attended the series in 2004, the last year that it was a 5 day event. UCLA over Cal. Very enjoyable. We went back sometime not long after we moved out here in 2011 - not sure of the year - and didn't stay for the final series due to the length you mention, we did the 5 days and skipped the following championship series. Enjoyable as well.

Now it can be 10 days. 6 days, off day, and up to 3 for the championship series. Very difficult to imagine doing this.

We did the Big 12 tourney this year at Devon Park (very low attendance). Each time we have been it has been expanded from the previous visit. A very impressive facility and excellent home for the World Series.

I am glad we aren't having an all SEC final. The final series should be intense. Hopefully the weather cooperates as they've had some rough times in the middle of the country recently.

UT vs. TTU - should be a fascinating final. Congrats to them both for making it to the end!

I'm just glad that Oklahoma's not in it. Yes, I'm a hater!

Ridiculous use of the fielder's interference rule that overturned the 'CS' that led to TT's 1-0 lead. Even though I'm rooting for the Red Raiders, I wanted them to score another run b/c winning the game just off that run alone would have not been a good look.

Either you intentionally walk a batter or just pitch to them. Having your catcher still standing partly/mostly behind the home plate while having Nija throwing balls up high was a dumb call by TT's coach. He tried to play it cute and they got burned big time.

Glad the umps let the game play out and didn't end it with the umpire's interference call and then the requested replay of the possible batter's interference. Would've been nonsensical since they returned the runner back to first base.

Wasted, great pitching effort by Canady. Hope she has two more in her and TT can turn it around and win it. Going to be very tough.

Texas Tech loading the based with on one out and getting nothing out of it was the key to this game. With pitchers like Canady and Kavan runs are hard to come by and you can't have that happen.

Great 2nd game. Pretty slow until the 5th but really fun to watch and gripping until the end. Glad we're getting a game 3.

Hoping Canady can further cement her legacy tomorrow. The hype she's had around her for the $1,000,000 NIL deal is insane and the fact that she's lived up to it and might carry them to a championship is unbelievable.

The story behind the NIL collective for Texas Tech is wild. From what I understand it's led by a person who recently sold his business for billions.

Baseball. The catcher had to be in his designated area behind the plate before the pitch was thrown. He couldn’t be way out to the right or left before that. Maybe the softball rule is the same. But I agree that the MLB rule now should be the softball rule. Just indicate to the ump that the you’re walking the batter and they can take the base without having to pitch to them.

Congrats to the Texas Longhorns on winning the title. Both teams were really good and played well. Great series and championship games.
