Can we please not do the "religion in sports" thing in this thread? Besides, wasn't this topic beaten to death in the previous pledge of allegiance threads?
Yes it was. :)

Actually I do. He supports a backwards, reactionary regressive interpretation of Christianity, one that is dangerous, horrifying, and repressive. This isnt a out "religion and sports"; this is about a guy and his family using sports to push the agenda of the evangelical right, and I am not ok with it. He has done no good for anyone. Missions? Please- it's a phony excuse to push his antiquated view of the world on people who are already Christian and desperately modernity, not his wretched, antiquated view of the world. He is dangerous, pompous, and on top of that, a crappy quarterback. Watching him get his ass kicked yesterday was a joy.
I was right, you know absolutely nothing about him.

lol - don't hold back, how do you really feel?

As a long long time Pats fan, I felt mildly miffed all week whenever I read a sports section. They seemed awfully filled with Tebow trivia & little about the Pats or their superstar qb.
And Brady certainly reminded them. :)

Meyers, it is ironic that you have a quote from Lily Tomlin in your signature line.

Why? My signature line has nothing to do with what is being discussed.

These quotes seem somehow appropriate to someone who thinks that people deserve to be offended by someone else's overt religious activities in a public place.
I'm sure she's said a lot of silly things, she's a comedian.

I really don't care for Denver or the Pats, though I would like to see Mr. tuck rule not win a playoff game for four straight years, that would be great. I over heard someone about six months ago say is it coincidence that the pats have not won a playoff game since they got caught cheating.... Heres to Tebow and his boys pasting the brady bunch.
To expand upon this logic, it appears the Pats were forgiven.

Nan, as you can see, I'm not the only one who thinks that a discussion of Tim Tebow goes beyond simply a discussion of football.

agree. A recent poll showed Tebow is the most popular professional athlete. His popularity is due to his Christian beliefs and volunteer work off the field as much as Ftball and QB skills. Both discussions are relevant.

Is he pompous? My impression is that he's actually rather self-effacing but for some reason the press that covered him in college and now in the pros want to gush over him.

The press is the entity making a big deal out of Tebow's actions...so typical of the press: build someone up to knock them down. If the press hadn't made such a big deal out of his actions, NO ONE WOULD CARE ABOUT TEBOW ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!

It's not entirely all on the media. Tebow appeared in a controversial anti-abortion TV ad that aired during the Super Bowl last year and another pro christian ad during his game last night.

BS it was only controversial because pro abortion people thought it was. Tell me what is so controversial about this ad.

PAM TEBOW: I call him my miracle baby. He almost didn't make it into this world. I remember so many times when I almost lost him. It was so hard. Well he's all grown up now, and I still worry about his health. Everybody treats him like he's different, but to me, he's just my baby. He's my Timmy, and I love him.
TIM TEBOW: Thanks mom. Love you too

The group Focus on the Family who created and paid $$$$ for the ad, is clearly anti-abortion, even if the message in the ad was spun to be more generic.

from Wiki:
The group supports the teaching of what it considers to be traditional family values. It advocates school sponsored prayer and supports corporal punishment. It strongly opposes LGBT rights, abortion, pornography, legalized gambling, and pre-marital and extramarital sexual activity. Focus on the Family also embraces and reflects the wider political agenda of its audience, for instance promoting a religiously-centered conception of American identity and the support of Israel.

Focus on the Family maintains a strong pro-life stand against abortion, and provides grant funding and medical training to assist crisis pregnancy centers (also known as pregnancy resource centers) in obtaining ultrasound machines. The organization has been staunchly opposed to public funding for elective abortions. According to the organization, this funding, which has allowed CPCs to provide pregnant women with live sonogram images of the developing fetus, has led directly to the birth of over 1500 babies who would have otherwise been aborted.

This is not the kind of controversy to have here. We're here because of a common interest in basketball, particularly UConn basketball. That's the basis of our sense of community.

We stay away from religious and socioreligious issues for the same reason we stay away from politics. A certain amount of OT is fine, but we've always stayed away from the really divisive stuff that needlessly undermines the focus of the board.

There are more appropriate places to discuss these issues if you want to. Tebow brought the crossroads of sports and religion to the fore, but now that's springboarded in directions that have nothing to do with football.

So that's an end of it. Those disappointed will have to find another venue to air their views on these subjects.
