Wow, just checked TMZ and saw this. Earlier today they had a Whitney Houston: Good Genes or Good Docs? article posted on the website. Crazy!

In 1986, I bought my first CD (they were these small things that were supposedly going to take the place of vinyl) with my first CD player. It was Whitney Houston, her eponymous album.

I have really fond memories of that CD -- and of being in the clubs in 1985-1986, dancing to Whitney.

Sigh.

If I produced a soundtrack of my college years, Whitney and Michael Jackson would dominate the tracks.

WHY do people blessed with such talent, torture themselves with drugs and alcohol???

So very sad. Talk about a tragic tale, and many wrong turns taken. May she rest in peace.

Unfortunately you could kinda see this coming for a few years. She had such a nice voice.

Probably her greatest performance.

Definitely one of the top SSB performances of the last 25 years - rightfully legendary.

Rita Williams was the ultimate Whitney Houston fan. She must be devastated

The Bodyguard is one of my all time favorite movies, not because of the story, but Whitney's singing.

She's lived a tough life when on the outside she appeared to have so many advantages because of her talents.

RIP

Terrible news. Known as the "Whit Women" in our family, she will be missed.
R.I.P

Such a sad tale of another superstar who loses themselves in their success and caves into the negative excess to help them cope with the pressure and expectations of that success. I am certain she never expected to end up another sad statistic. RIP, Ms. Houston. May you find the peace that seemed to elude you for so long.

Amen, chapette...I'm a generation beyond Whitney and that explains why I am reminded of a tragedy of one who goes back 2 generations prior to Ms. Houston, one Dinah Washington, defeated by similar forces at age 39 in 1963. I don't know Whitney's music, including whether she had a signature song that will reverberate for fans decades from now. But many, many my age will ever remember "What a Difference a Day Makes".

A tragic end for a tragic figure.

Add her name to a long list of self destructive talent. Garland, Holliday, Joplin . . .
