Truly sad. Remember watching him in college and he was simply special on the field. Off of it,not so much. What an incredible waste of talent.
Non-news.

I don't not feel anything about this story because it's not worth the time or effort. Three NFL teams, Arena League, CFL, NFL Europe, and he got reinstated for the national championship. That is 7 chances by my count and he squandered them all. The world is a better place with him in jail.

Except for his roommate.

I think about that 1996 Fiesta Bowl often. I really disliked Spurrier and really enjoyed watching Phillips and Frazier literally run over and around the UF defenders. (I ended up marrying a girl from Nebraska whose whole family are big Huskers fans who like to talk about 1994-95.)

There's something very wrong with Phillips and that's been evident for a long time.

Why is it sad? Because he could run fast with a football? He's a criminal.

"But why male models?"
"Are you serious? I just told you that a minute ago."

He explained why he thought it was sad: because it "was an incredible waste of talent." (It's also sad because this guy's mental issues ended up resulting in a number of serious injuries and now a death.) The guy grew up in foster homes and while that doesn't excuse his behavior, it's probably where his serious mental and anger issues originate.

Anybody can have serious mental issues (anger [emotional] falls under that umbrella term). Granted, somebody growing up being shuffled through foster homes would be susceptible to deep emotional issues, but not specifically serious mental issues aside from emotional ones. What sets him apart is his apparent lack of self control. THAT is what differentiates people who act on violent impulses, and those who do not. Hell, there are those who walk among us suffering demons that would make your HDTV lose reception, yet they still don't act on their impulses.

Self control.

That's something Nebraska shoulda/coulda/woulda picked up on with basic psych exams to determine if he were susceptible to such acts, but it wasn't in their interest to do so.

I don't disagree with you. I will say that people abused (physically, sexually, even emotionally) as a child tend to be abusers as adolescents and adults. But, again, that may explain but does not excuse people's bad behavior.

It's really the nature/nurture argument. If you're raised to be a , then chances are better you'll be that way. But then, there are people who are just wired that way, and their upbringing will not affect their outcome...

Having a rough life isn't a license to be a criminal. Because he could run really fast, he had access to people and money and the ability to help himself. And he didn't.

OK, I don't really find that to be responsive to what I wrote, but I understand your take.

There haven't been any details on the killing but for some reason I think the cause of death might have been choking. Phillips has a history of that but usually with women.

You are a very narrow minded person. The world is never a better place with someone in prison. Thats one more person who decided not to contribute to the greater good of humanity which would then make the world a better place but instead are now every tax payers burden. One criminal being put in prison doesnt make the world any safer. Its like trying to save the titanic with a bucket.

He had SEVEN chances to contribute to humanity. Animals who do this amount of damage are put down.

Want an example of a sad situation made reasonably okay? Check out Maurice Clarrett. I can support his effort. Philips is a lost cause.

Facile nonsense. It's tragic that Lawrence Phillips grew up the way that he did and became the person that he did doing the horrible things that he has done, but it is absolutely true that the world (outside of his prison cell, evidently) is a better place with him in prison than it would be if he were outside prison free to continuing to wreak havoc on innocent as he had done his whole life.

Is there a point to what you are trying to say?? 'Cause it appears I'm not the only one in that boat.

My world isn't all unicorns, rainbows, and puppies.

Please explain how a freed Lawrence Phillips benefits anyone. If someone, "decide(s) not to contribute to the greater good of humanity," and they remain outside the prisons' walls, what makes you believe they all of a sudden cease to be, "every tax payers [sic] burden?" What makes you believe someone like this would find continuous and gainful employment? What makes you think they would contribute to the tax base? Phillips has a history of violence and has proven time and time again to be a substantial risk to social wellbeing. As a tax payer, he's a burden to me either way. So the fact that a huge cement wall, reinforced steel and guys with guns are between me and him is a good thing in my book.

You have come to your own conclusions about my comment. No further explanation is nessassary because youve already decided what i said. Not worth the effor to explain myself further. Sure some others are also in your boat but others understood my point.

If I came to any conclusions on your comments, it's because of the dictionary meaning of words of which you wrote.

The only reason why I still am posting in this thread is because you tried to insult me. I've given you my thoughts, but you only offer up vagaries and declare that I missed your point. You are now trying to slink out of the discussion on the grounds of effort worthiness. People can still agree to disagree, but an end result of a discussion is both parties at least understand where the other is coming from. You've chosen (in this instance) not to engage, but instead to hit and run. That's fine. Whatever floats your boat...

Who's narrow minded again?
