I'm betting this has happened to others here.
Don't know what/how, but as of ~2 weeks ago, I've been getting bursts of unsolicited ads on Firefox browser. On a web page, I click to follow a story to next page and - whamo - an ad opens in a new window (close window, and desired page is on the original window). I get a 2.5 x 2.5" video frame that opens sporadically in the lower right corner of the screen. And I get this 'window shade' (labeled browseFox)that rolls down from the upper right corner hawking a car, or whatever. It seems that the entire right hand column of a web page is now dedicated to ads. I might add that Yahoo can remove those from their mail ap for $2 / month). These 'edge ads' also appear on BY threads.
I have run Norton multiple times, but the antagonist persists. Have I been spammed, virused, botted, wormed, trojaned, etc?? and what to do about it?? Is there a good cleanser? - Norton is clearly ineffective here. Or is this the effect of specific ad revenue policy by any given visited website?
