This is correct, though basketball is moving up to a solid #4. Not approaching HS FB, but legitimately popular. As of 2011, where the spending data are from, U of Texas was spending quite a lot on both its women's and men's BB coaches, but that number will drop for WBB for the time being.I believe Alex has told us that the 3 biggest sports in Texas are:
1. College football
2. Pro football
3. High school football
There's a clear pattern there.

And yes, HS FB facilities are crazy there. Here is Lake Travis HS's weight room:

And don't forget Allen High School's new football stadium. 60 million dollars (more than some entire high schools), 18,000 seat capacity. This is correct, though basketball is moving up to a solid #4. It's a topic of significant conversation on Texas boards: will/would you let your son play football. Participation will definitely decrease somewhat, but it's not clear how much. Certainly in poorer rural and inner city areas, the possibility of helping your family have a better life is going to be a strong allure, and others will allow their sons to play through the high school level as long as they don't get concussions.I wonder if all the recent bad publicity about football related concussions will impact the popularity of the sport in high school. Just yesterday Giants great Harry Carson was interviewed and he spoke of head injuries both given and received. Said he wouldn't let his child play football. Although those weights develop bodies, they do nothing to protect the brain from added punishment those bodies dish out.
