Good luck to Coach Marshall in whatever he does. He was our "Edsall" in hockey, in a way.

He is much more like our Tom Jackson than he is our Randy Edsall. He took a mediocre lower D1 program and kept it there leading up to a program upgrade.

Unfortunately, we were never able to keep the momentum up after getting the benefit of the Krygier family genetics back in the early 90's.

I meant that he presided through our upgrade from D3 to D1. Jackson coached at the D1-AA level.

Sportsguy,
I think he was put in an untenable position really. He buit the program into an ECAC/D3 really competitive one, and was pretty competitive in the early MAAC D1 days, but as others added scholarships, UConn struggled to keep up. And I think trying to run a non-scholarship program led to lots of ups and downs, and some locker room issues, but over all he did a pretty good job and he did push for the Hockey East thing even when everyone said it was impossible.

I remember watching him play d for UConn as a kid...then step behind the bench and become an Asst to Ben Kirtland...then take top job a few years later when Kirtland moved up into a Administration job in the Athletic Dept. I wish him luck and good health in his future endeavors. It will be interesting to see how Manuel approaches what is a VERY critical hire for the program. Something else to add to a already full plate!

That is going to be an interesting question. I have to wonder, and I read a comment elsewhere, if Berard, the assistant, was brought in to ultimately take over. He was far more experienced than most UConn assistants who were typically a couple of years out of college. I guess he'll get an audition the rest of the season. Unlike basketball, I think the hockey world is pretty small and everyone knows who the options are.

I wish him the best and hope his health improves. He is as loyal as they come.

The reality, however...he was 88 games under 500. Almost incredible how bad they were at times with him as a coach. This is the chance for UConn to shoot for the moon. I think the assistant who has been running the team since his leave has done a wonderful job, and should also be considered.

I admittedly don't know much about college hockey coaches available, but is it possible to offer whoever the Quinnipiac coach is double his salary to move a few miles northeast and coach in the best college hockey conference in the land?

Pecknold turned down the UMass job over the summer and got a big raise, but never say never. He's got the #5 team in the country right now.

Ben occasionally came back to his HS to help out when I played. Nice guy but mostly he was just showing off (kidding). He's lower left. Never played hockey at UConn but spent hours on that rink and quite a few intramural games.

Jim it is kind if sad how Kirtland's career has ended up. After following Perkins to Kansas he got involved in that whole ticket scandal. He is now serving 57 months in a federal prison for conspriacy to commit wire fraud, tax obstruction, and transportation of stolen propert across state lines for his involvement in said scandal at Kansas. I think his son also named Ben is now a freshman on the Uconn hockey team.

I wondered if the Kirkland kid was related. He scored the game winner Friday night and looked like a solid player. Patrick is his name, not Ben.

FD do you know what capacity he served that put him at the center of the scandal? That's very surprising and depressing news to hear on top of everything else lately. A heavy sentence for sure.

OK I found it. Not Good: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/basketball/ncaa/05/12/kansas.ticket.probe.ap/index.html

More detail. Had originally agreed to a $63,000 settlement with the university, but prosecutors saw it much differently: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/m...-official-ben-kirtland-sentenced-57/?breaking

Great picture. Too funny, brings back some memories seeing Walshy, Flats, Collins, Driscoll, Vez, and Murph
