It speaks volumes that UConn's arguably best player the year before last played only on third down passing situations at Purdue last year. At not his natural position. With a coaching staff that could fully appreciate him although perhaps not his last accomplishments at UConn.
If you look at the PFF (seems to do the best ranking of players productivity) All-AAC teams in 2019, UConn had 5 players mentioned: Matt Peart 1st team OT, Cam Ross Honorable Mention WR, Ryan Van Demark Honorable Mention OT, Travis Jones 3rd team DT, and Tyler Coyle 3rd team S. Coyle had a lot of tackles due to the defense's issues, but I think when we look back on the team, Peart, Van Demark, Ross, and Jones will be thought of as better players.
When you look at the safeties that made one of the 2019 All-AAC teams, only 1 was drafted and he was a 5th round pick so Coyle making 3rd team probably indicated that he wouldn't have been drafted.
As for his time at Purdue, remember, the DC was Bob Diaco! Read up on how Diaco's defense did at Purdue. It was a bend but don't break defense with few sacks or turnovers. Sound familiar? He was fired after 1 year.
