OT: Throwback to Olde Coach: Mikaela Shiffrin hits 100

Olde Coach memory here:

He was up at HIS academy in Vermont and one of the coaching staff asked him to check out a
video of Shriffin on a practice run. She was a student there...her age then 13.
Coach watches the video and he told me he started to cry. Reason? He said he had never, ever
seen such beautiful technique from anybody...boy/girl/man/woman.
As he got to know her over her last years at his academy he said her personality and
character were a match for her skiing technique..basically he was just crazy about her.

Best women's skier...of all time...and still at it despite her recent injuries.

Uhh...Nan...could you please change my last sentence?

"her" recent injuries.

"my" recent injury was merely from a fall on an Adirondacky snowy,
slippery sidewalk...no big deal for sure.

The days are quite long gone when Burke was our go to everyday place and Miss S was first out there and last to leave...the main lift goes right over the Academy practice area...and she was clearly in a different class from everyone.

And Olde Coach became a delightful acquaintance and a long distance mentor for my forever "duffer" skiing, autographed his two books (which revolutionized both racing and then recreational skiing)...I must admit, having adopted his carving technique for a few seasons...I've come (mostly) back to the 1962/3 Austrian ski approach ...easier on my olde legs

I last saw him in Middlebury Vt a few months before his stroke and he was a tower of strength...A great loss
