This is the time of the year when most are busy with immediate family. We AlL have extended family away in many hostile lands and aboard ships and subs patrolling bad places.
My wife just brought out my copy of The Soldiers Night Before Christmas---I was going to transcribe it for your reading pleasure---but I fear legal restrictions. So I'm sure you can google it.

In the military I was away for a few long years time. I could forget birthdays, Easter and other holidays--but Christmas, no matter how I tried--just brought up emotions that are hard to deny.
I'm sure the few hundred ex Service Boneyarders can relate.

If you know any one or the child of any one---you can still get packages sent to them. Don't worry too much about what you send--it's the thought and the note you leave that says---God bless you and keep you . Thank you for protecting me--We love you!!

BROA: Good for your wife and you to think of this. Can still recall the Christmases of WW II, and the depth of the feelings of all sorts as the days peeled off the calendar leading toward Christmas Eve, with many of our Appalachian extended family serving over seas.....and, especially on that night listening on the radio to the music and lyrics of "I'll be home for Christmas" ......and "White Christmas" and all the traditional carols. Powerful and unforgettable. One of the fellows did not make it back.......a white cross in Colleville-sure-Mer Normandy. The others returned. All were heroes. Merry Christmas and stay well.

Winlots---Thanks for the good words
Like you my family (2 sides) had about 50 with 40 or more in both theaters (some today think movies)
and none were physically damaged --my brother had PtSD and Malaria as did other but they all came home.

God bless you sir---there are so few of us left that remember it as it was. Thanks.

There aren't enough words to express the appreciation & gratitude to THE GREATEST GENERATION and all the men & women who have stood the wall to keep all of us safe and free!
Whenever you see a person in uniform please thank them for their service, it's the least we can do! And you'll get the return gift of a huge smile for the recognition!

I am glad that you made this post and reminded everyone that there are still folks who stand on the wall even on Christmas Eve and Day. Some of these folks don't have a room to sleep in and try to find a warm spot on the ground hidden from the dangers around them. They don't get the traditional hot meals and see the festive lights of the day, and, the loneliness experienced is on their minds. But, I will bet that private prayers are thought and wishes for a happy day and new year for their loved ones are dreamed in their minds. They miss the smiles and good cheer of their families, friends, and neighbors. But, someone has to "stand on that wall" so that others can enjoy the festive mood of this time of the year.

I remember. I really, really remember.

Merry Christmas, My Friend

By James M. Schmidt, a Marine Lance Corporal
stationed in Washington, D.C., in 1986
Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.

I had come down the chimney, with presents to give
and to see just who in this home did live

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,
a sobering thought soon came to my mind.
For this house was different, unlike any I'd seen.
This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I'd heard stories about them, I had to see more,
so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene,
Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine.
Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.
I soon understood, this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,
because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice,
"Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice
I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more.
My life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.
I noticed he shivered from the cold night's chill.
So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
and covered this Marine from his toes to his head.

Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold,
with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.
And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn't want to leave him so quiet in the night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure,
said "Carry on, Santa, it's Christmas Day, all secure."

One look at my watch and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.
