First point I do recognize this is the football board.
Second I am not coming here to defend HFD, in general. I get it.
However with regard to his point on WM he is simply being hyperbolic as usual. And I get his point, in fact I share his view (kinda).
You guys are just missing the point and probably just not paying attention.
The underlying premise that WM actions (with respect to KO) were basically in WM best interests and not in the best interests of CT basketball or the University is the sentiment of many, if the not majority, of knowledgeable and passionate CT basketball fans, who felt WM initial handling of the transition was lets just say "not good" (my personal feeling are in fact much stronger).
KO's position to recruit was compromised by his tenuous contract making UConn vulnerable to negative recruiting (hopefully this concept does not need further explanation to football centric readers). It was obvious that WM was in a difficult position (for WM), rubber stamping the hand picked successor to HOF coach
JC did nothing for his credibility and ego....so he structured the "deal" as a win/win for WM.
Thing is that many bb folk familiar with KO's long established character, accomplishments and work ethic, had no doubt KO was the perfect choice. KO established himself as an effective recruiter, possessed copious bb knowledge gleaned fromtutelage under many HOF caliber coaches, mentored all star NBA talent and was Husky true blue hand picked by "the man",HOFC, the guy who built the program. Most felt the buyout option was the better alternative to what WM did.
Nevertheless what really irked many was how long this thing played out and what some recruits said influenced their decisions to go elsewhere and how unnecessary this saga was.
As play commenced any doubts even to the casual observer, regarding KO abilities were put to rest, yet he was still held in limbo with a 7 mo contract.
WM finally did the right thing, most everyone agrees, in December.
It was time to exhale and celebrate, UConn had their man although a bit late for 2013 recruiting.
Anyone who thinks WM did a good job with KO has just not paid attention.
This could have gone south very easily (and probably would have for just about 99% of the population not named KO).
The fact that it didn't was no thanks to WM.
KO is the one who is just that good.
It was obvious long before December to anyone that paid attention.
KO did it preaching "ten toes in".....and in reality, thanks to WM, KO did it with both hands tied behind his back. Thanks WM, big props, NOT
