23..After WWII, Berlin like Germany itself was partitioned into zones controlled by the different allies. Berlin was wholly contained within the Soviet zone. The Soviets at one point unilaterally closed all land access to Berlin. In order to get food and supplies into Berlin it had to be flown in by a massive airlift that no one really thought was possible.
