Hey wire chief, with all due respect, 10000 years is wrong by quite a bit. The last mammoth died about 4000 or 5000 years ago. While it's true that mainland mammoths died out 10000 to 12000 years ago, a small population held out on Wrangel Island until about 2000BC. I also might add that the same surprises have been found for Smilodon Populator, maybe the largest cat that ever lived. Bones found several years back in South America were carbon dated to 5000BC and bones found in Tennessee or Kentucky during a building excavation were carbon dated to 7000BC. Also, speculation that the Great Short Faced Bear, the largest mammalian carnivore to have ever lived, may have held out in the Northwestern part of North America much later than 8000BC, has it's roots in the Northwest and Canadian legend of Sasquatch/Bigfoot in Indian lore, but who knows?
