Recently there has been much reporting of the strong armed and bullying tactics used by college sports. I can understand why there is a movement to form a players union. At present there is no organization to protect the athletes. It seems a scholarship is a contract binding on the athlete for the term of the contract but is not binding on the college. Perhaps the athletes could be provided some protection by the NLRB. I don't believe an arbitration board can be established because the athletes have no power to reject anyone from sitting on the panel.

Is it the understanding that these athletes have had their scholarships taken away from them after the school year started. Do they now have to pay for attending UT or is there scholarship still good for this school year. How disgusting can a coach get.

This from the article.

"Stanton said UT placed no transfer restrictions on the women and will honor the athletes’ scholarships through the end of the 2015 spring semester."

So, they will honor their financial obligation for the school year but the students have absolutely no privileges as athletes. If they want to transfer to another school and be a scholarship athlete, then it will be difficult for them to maintain fitness as a elite athlete through the school year.

Plus they will have to sit out another year. (Read in a different article.)
