South Carolina has a great coach and is playing really well this year!! Glad to see a lot more parity in the SEC. If they can land Wilson, and I think they will, instant final four contender next year. Staley has done a great job building their program.
Thanks; classy post.

Surely you understood the point?

Holdsclaw hit over 50% while Simmons hit 41%

To be fair, you expect a player who doesn't take a lot of threes to hit a higher percentage, but you can adjust for that by calcuating points per shot.

Here's what the numbers look like:
Holdsclaw 1.034312
Gordon 1.027204
Parker 1.087045
Catchings 1.090305
Lawson 1.088814
Simmons 0.963443

Which one looks like not the others?
Ahhhh; statistics warm the cockles of my heart!

Ok here are the numbers.
Holdsclaw FG 1,233 made 2,419 attempts 3's 36 made 144 attempts.
Gordon FG 1,017 made 1,985 attempts 3's 5 made 10 attempts.
Parker FG 797 made 1,482 attempts 3's 17 made 60 attempts.
Catchings FG 760 made 1,506 attempts 3's 122 made 366 attempts.
Lawson FG 675 made 1,475 attempts 3's 256 made 617 attemps.
Simmons FG 696 made 1,696 attempts 3's 242 made 699 attemps.
Looks like Holdsclaw took more shots.
But scored a thousand more points.

There haven't been many players score 3,000 points. Parker may have if she had that fourth year. How many players have been better than Holdsclaw? Few if any. She was NCAA player of the century. Simmons still has a few games left. I think she will pass Lawson at 1,950 points. She did pass 1,900 in the game today.

I think the point being made here is that Simmons is a very incomplete player. Her scoring is offset by her shortcomings. Turnovers, little teamwork, poor shot selection, lack of defense, inability to play well in the clutch, etc. How many points she scores matters little in the face of these other factors.

Simmons is certainly a lightning rod isn't she!? I have said before she would be on the bench if she was on my squad..... Too erratic, too self centered when it comes to shooting..... not the catalyst who spurs the offense, but one who cannot work within the framework of it..... and big connecting clause...... UNLESS she is directed to run it that way..... I have noticed this year that she has kept her emotion in check during games....(took 3 yrs. for this)..... and she has started to pass the ball a little more.... and if she is the best UT has..... Wow.... If I was coach, I would pound the ball down low where Margo and others have said the LVs have a decided advantage.. I think it is a coaching void that gameplan does not capitalize on this....

I remember back in the 70s I think.... Ausin Peay Univ. in Clarksville had a run-and-gun talent .....on men's team ...Fly Williams he averaged 35 a game I think.....led the nation but he was not a success in the long run.... because he never brought his teammates into the fold.. I think of Meaghan as Fly Jr. I respect her improvement.... but I do not think she can be part of a final four push next month

Impressive but I would love to see how many shots each of those players took.
As you wish.
Holdsclaw 3025 pts / 2419 shots (144 3pt) 1.25 pps
Gordon 2462 pts / 1985 shots (10 3pt) 1.24 pps
Parker 2137 pts / 1482 shots (60 3pt ) 1.44 pps
Catchings 2113 pts / 1508 shots (366 3pt) 1.40 pps
Lawson 1950 pts / 1475 shots (607 3pt) 1.32 pps
Simmons 1911 pts / 1696 shots (699 3pt) 1.13 pps

Note: Parker did that in 3 years.

On Edit: I see I am a little late to the party (typical), but I think I'll leave it anyway. A little bit different info than has been posted.

The fact that Holdsclaw scored 3,000 points. Without taking many threes is impressive. So is Parker points in just three years. From what I've seen of Dunbar. I don't think the three point shot will drop next year. She can shoot. She don't have the speed of Simmons.

Next to BG, Holdsclaw is my favorite player of all time. It is sad that mental health issue interrupted her career, but she was a spectacular player to watch in college.
