All the great planning in the world is not as effective as plain dumb luck.

Is there a fan or pundit who seriously believes that the Red Sox would be where they are had they relied on Bailey or Hanrahan as their closer -- instead of some 38-year old named Uehara. I think not.

That's one way to look at it. Another is to say that well planned depth is rewarded. Since converting to the bullpen Uehara was outstanding for Baltimore and Texas yet the Red Sox were able to get him for a very reasonable contract. When the need came he was "next man up."
