I never 'rooted' for Tony, but I did sympathize and watch with a sick fascination to see whether or not his lifestyle would catch up with him.

By the end of the show he was unredeemable, corrupting anything that got close to him. For instance watch how Bobby Baccala transformed from a naïve, kind hearted buffoon into more and more of a monster as he got closer to Tony in the later seasons. You can watch the show and appreciate the characters while recognizing them for what they were.

Not sure about "rooting". I didn't root for Tony, when he cheated on his wife, killed his nephew for example. I watched the show, enjoyed the characters.
