OT: Single Line FAX and phone

Does anyone here use a fax on the same phone line as a phone? If so, are special routing machines needed so that if a fax comes in the regular phone and its message taking system doesn't pick up? Looking on line I see that such machines are sold, but fairly expensive. So, is there a way to wire without such a device and/or can anyone recommend a device that works well that isn't expensive. We don't fax that often.

I know how to use a scanner at the supermarket without calling for help. One small step for a man, one giant leap for husbands who grocery shop.
