Not to "beat a dead horse"- But the owner of the Belmont Winner, "Shell" Evans, his family owned Pleasant Colony, who won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and lost in the Belmont yrs back. And their horse Tonalist had some health issues that prevented him from running the earlier two races. That horse was bred specifically to run the Triple Crown. Sham, the 2nd place horse to Secretariat in the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, like many of the prior non winners, was a magnificent horse, and happened to be much better than this year's winner of those racers. But the story of a $10,000 horse winning the first two legs is a great story.
