My kid's travel soccer team practices in the Laettner Gymnasium at his old private high school. Back when Laettner was flush, he donated some money to the school for the gym. It's actually the sub-gymnasium, they have 2, but it's a big one. Well, Christian lost a lot of money in real estate, and couldn't fulfill his donation commitment. So now all the parents joke that they should take the last 4 letters of the gym's name and just call it the "Laet Gym."

Rod should not have done that of course but it was so satisfying to watch back then. Reminds me of an old outrage - If I recall correctly this earned Rod a suspension in the opening game of the following year's tournament. Meanwhile in another game (versus Kentucky?) Laettner obviously stomped his foot on the chest of an opposing player who was lying helpless on the floor, and no punishment ever of course. Laettner made it easy to dislike him.

I love how Chrissy's teammates did next to nothing to back up their teammate.

Ahhh, so the NCAA grudge against UConn goes back farther than I thought! The officials on the floor at the time had the best look at it and they got the call right. Incidental contact, no foul.

"The penalty imposed in May by the National Collegiate Athletic Association is unfair. UConn and Big East officials were remiss in not fighting it sooner."

What else is new.

After that game, I told Rod that was the greatest play I had ever seen on a basketball court. He smiled & said "Coach didn't think so" & told me about the letter of apology he wrote. I think it would have been appropriate for Duke to have written an apology for having Laettner on it's team...
