So Hoda and Kathy Lee's show is on in the lobby of my office...and apparently they are visitng UT (the "other" UT) this week, and the band has been playing "Rocky Top" for what seems like a solid hour. The receptionist doesn't seem to understand my desperate pleadings to change the channel.

Please...it's the ersatz UT, not the other UT. :)

For my money, it doesn't get more grating than Boomer Sooner, but Rocky Top is certainly close.

Actually I love bluegrass music. And if it wasn't associated with UT, I'd probably like it. But.......

Me too, and ditto Meyers. Though I'd have had the same reaction Sarals did if Rocky Top were blaring from my lobby. Encouraged by the reception of Yo Yo Ma and company's Goat Rodeo session and recent Bela Fleck, I'm happy to find that Bluegrass as an enlivening force in contemporary music is doing well.

That's "UT".

Yes Today show was on campus. Both Gifford and Kotb had on Vols jersey. Pat was there and Spani.

My son (21) actually listens to Old Crow Medicine Show. Go figure.

It's not the music - it's the unsubtle references to drunkenness and bestiality in the lyrics that grosses me out. I guess that moonshine really does a number on you even before it rots your brain.

Ok I can see a problem with bestiality, but it would seem drinking/drunkenness should fit right in?

It is a southern thing. Georgia Tech's fight song includes references to drinking:

I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an engineer—
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer.
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.
Oh! If I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do—
He would yell, 'To hell with Georgia!' like his daddy used to do.
Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it round.
I'd drink to all the good fellows who come from far and near.
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', hell of an engineer!

My GT boy celebrated his 21st birthday yesterday, but not in the GT way. He doesn't like whiskey. How he knows this I have no idea

I know, I know. Knew my boys drank (fraternity guys), but wasn't sure about my daughter, 18 at the time. She never talked about it like the boys did. Was talking to my step-son about a party he had been at with them. He said, "oh she can drink, she'll drink her brothers under the table". Great.

Well that sure beats Rocky Top:
Wish that I was on ole rocky top,
Down in the tennessee hills.
Ain't no smoggy smoke on rocky top,
Ain't no telephone bills.
Translation: No phones or utilities in much of Tennessee

Once there was a girl on rocky top,
Half bear the other half cat.
Wild as a mink, sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that.
Translation: unclear but it appears to be some kind of beastiality fantasy

Chorus:
Rocky top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Once two strangers climbed on rocky top,
Lookin' for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come back from rocky top,
Guess they never will.
Translation: Advocates the killing of law enforcement.

Corn won't grow at all on rocky top,
Dirt's too rocky by far.
That's why all the folks on rocky top
Get their corn from a jar.
Translation: Without the prospect of farming or employment residences resort to corn liquor.

Chorus

Now I've had years of cramped up city life,
Trapped like a duck in a pen.
Now all I know is it's a pity life
Can't be simple again.
Translation: Residences are unable to fit in a urban setting.

....and that's there fight song? It's all very sad when you think about it.

What's our fight song?
UConn Husky, symbol of might to the foe.
Fight, fight Connecticut, It's vict'ry, Let's go.
Connecticut UConn Husky,
Do it again for the White and Blue
So go--go--go Connecticut, Connecticut U.
C-O-N-N-E-C-T-I-C-U-T
Connecticut, Conneticut Husky, Connecticut Husky
Connecticut C-O-N-N-U!

UConn Husky, symbol of might to the foe.
Fight, fight Connecticut, It's vict'ry, Let's go.
Connecticut UConn Husky,
Do it again for the White and Blue
So go--go--go Connecticut, Connecticut U.
C-O-N-N-E-C-T-I-C-U-T
Connecticut, Conneticut Husky, Connecticut Husky
Connecticut C-O-N-N-U!
Really an awful song, but the music is catchy and hummable.
