Shocked to see this - I knew he had been battling cancer , possibly throat/mouth type(?) but had no idea it had progressed this far.

He was only 54 years old. Gone WAY too soon.

One of the greatest pure hitters of his generation.

Sad news indeed. Far too young. Was an awesome hitter and a very tough out.

Yikes- that guy was a BEAST in the batter's box. I remember him hitting .370 in the late '80s. And then he was hitting .394 in 1994 and might have broken .400 had it not been for the damn strike. Nifty base stealer, too.

There are stories that he and Ted Williams would have great conversations about the art of hitting a baseball. Who wouldn't want to be a fly on the wall for that?

RIP, Tony. You were, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the good guys.

He blames tobacco for the cancer. Back in my younger days, I collected cards. The year of 1983 with Boggs, Gwynn and Sandberg was definitely one of my favorite (I once got all three cards in a single pack in 1990 - jackpot!). Very sad day. As a baseball player and coach, I would loved to have been able to have any of my guys have the plate discipline Gwynn came with every day. One of the best!

He and Rod Carew were the toughest outs I saw play.

Tony was a good guy and an icon in San Diego.

I didn't know he had been ill. He was way, way too young.

RIP, Mr. Padre.
