OT: RIP John Perry Barlow | The Boneyard

OT: RIP John Perry Barlow

Might be the smartest guy I’ve ever met,

A rare man is a lyricist for The Grateful Dead and a surrogate father of the Internet

grew up as a cowboy on a huge Wyoming ranch .
Has CT ties as he went to Wesleyan .

Spent time at the cutting edge of Learys lsd revolution at mill brook in the 60s

And started the E.F.F. at the birth of the Internet.

What a life .

So if you know who he is you're over 60?

I had the pleasure of sharing some coughfee with JPB several years ago, real nice guy until someone asked him what his favorite song he wrote with Bobby was (not me). May the four winds blow you safely home . . .

Bobby drove him nuts. He liked writing for Brent better.

I’m 50 and I guarantee the OP is much younger than me as are others in this thread
I'm over 60 and being a dead head I know of him well
He was to Bob Weir as Robert Hunter was to Jerry
RIP JPB
May the Eyes of the World be with you

He and Bobby enjoyed a special bond but his personality more mirrored Brent
He was a true cowboy poet

We shared a close friend so I had the pleasure of his company a few times over the years. My love is music and my work is digital privacy - not many people out there who were pioneers in both. Smart and always kind. RIP Barlow. 70 was way too soon.

I grew up in the Bay Area. My girlfriend in high school/college lived next door to Brent Midland. I’ve never heard of John Perry Barlow. I guess I wasn’t much of a Dead fan.

found this golden nugget this morning - probably would work as principals for the Boneyard as well ;-)

ADULT PRINCIPLES -John Perry Barlow
1 Be patient. No matter what.
2 Don't badmouth: Assign responsibility, not blame. Say nothing of another you wouldn't say to him.
3 Never assume the motives of others are, to them, less noble than yours are to you.
4 Expand your sense of the possible.
5 Don't trouble yourself with matters you truly cannot change.
6 Don't ask more of others than you can deliver yourself.
7 Tolerate ambiguity.
8 Laugh at yourself frequently.
9 Concern yourself with what is right rather than who is right.
10 Try not to forget that, no matter how certain, you might be wrong.
11 Give up blood sports.
12 Remember that your life belongs to others as well. Don't risk it frivolously.
13 Never lie to anyone for any reason. (Lies of omission are sometimes exempt.)
14 Learn the needs of those around you and respect them.
15 Avoid the pursuit of happiness. Seek to define your mission and pursue that.
16 Reduce your use of the first personal pronoun.
17 Praise at least as often as you disparage.
18 Admit your errors freely and quickly.
19 Become less suspicious of joy.
20 Understand humility.
21 Remember that love forgives everything.
22 Foster dignity.
23 Live memorably.
24 Love yourself.
25 Endure.

If we did, they'd have to shutdown the Cesspool.

This sucks. That guy was pretty great. About ten years ago I had roommates in Brooklyn and was having a small saturday Bday party. One of my roommates invited a friend over. On his motorcycle, in rolls JPB. He hung out for about 4 hours, grilling in the back, talking all manor of Dead. He had a life really well lived!! RIP JPB
