One of the greatest jerks who ever lived and a true Hollywood legend. He was at one time the highest grossing movie star and tv star at the same time. Saw his last interview with Conan this year and it was awesome, he was surprisingly funny and his stories are legendary.

Here he is in classic jerk mode.

I’ve got to ask West for an Aunt photo from back then....

Damn. This is sad. The Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit movies dominated my early movie watching.

Two of his movies I watched when I was young were "Gator", and "White Lightning". Those were awesome movies, probably came out around the same time give or take as the original "Walking Tall" with Jo Don Baker as Buford Pusser. Great 70s movies.

The couple of times over the years that I listened to Burt R. at Seminole functions, he was cordial, funny, and wry...sounded like he knew who he was.

Not yet mentioned was his great performance in one of the truly great films of all time, Deliverance. IMO, his greatest role.

I loved every movie I saw of his. Every one. From Deliverance through Boogie Nights and all points in between, and especially Smokey and the Bandit. Like millions of boys and men, a T-top Trans Am was my dream car because of him. And I loved Sally Field, too.

All that said, I can't think of Smokey and the Bandit without reviewing what is now my favorite scene, even though he is not in it. Jackie's genius:

Great role, but imo, quintessential Burt was in Smokey and the Bandit. Like Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused, he was born to play that part.

This reads like, "Oh ... and I love Sally Field too! So don't misinterpret my man crush." :-).

All three are awesome.
