OT: Rest In Peace Robert Redford

Another legend gone. As we get to be a "certain age", it's inevitable that legends and icons will pass, but it's still surprising to me when it happens. Sort of feel like they would live forever.

I guess I'm at the age when I hear someone has died, my first thought is "they were still alive?"

Likely just my age talking, but I don't think future generations are gonna have a Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen (all b. in '20s or '30s) ... as leading men.
Hollywood is so different now it’s hard to compare. There are certainly some incredibly talented actors working today. But, great movies today are influenced a lot by arthouse, early independent films, and other factors.

I liked Redford a lot by the way. Gatsby, All the Presidents Men, Brubaker, obviously Butch Cassidy. Watched The Candidate in a Political Satire in Film class in college and really enjoyed it to. RIP.

Movies today are barely even considered unless they will be the first in a franchise, or the very least a trilogy.

I disagree, there are great movies being made today to watch. The International Film scene is great too. Just have to dig deep sometimes

Honest question. How would you know they're great? It's either a Marvel movie or Pixar voiceover.

Because I go to the movies multiple times each month, have been doing so for years, and have seen many great films?

So many people on this board think new things suck and old things are the best, such a lame, lazy point of view.

Not for nothing, Chalamet is 29 and Redford did Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at 33. And you could argue, if Redford had TikTok and Instagram back then, they would have been.....Personally, I've never seen a Timothee Chamalet movie but I know who he is.
A Complete Unknown is worth a watch

I've been obsessed with the movie industry since I was a kid and I find it extremely difficult to find great movies nowadays. What are all these great Hollywood movies you're seeing in the theater these days. The last great movies I saw were Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. One is a South Korean film and the other a Hollywood film and they are now at least 6 years old.

People in the Hollywood industry will tell you the industry is badly broken and the only stuff really getting greenlit are superhero/shoot em up franchises and remakes. This isn't some out of touch boomer opinion that things suck now, they actually do suck in Hollywood now.

Give me your top 3-4 great films from the last year or so. I watch anything but Marvel garbage.

I studied film in College, I am not just biased towards my generation either, I have an incredible admiration for older movies and would agree that all-in-all the quality has been better in the past. Here’s a list of Very good to Great movies I have seen the past couple of years in theatres:

Past Lives
Perfect Days
Nickel Boys
Sing Sing
The Holdovers
I’m Still Here
The Hand of God
Decision to Leave
Banshees
Aftersun
The Worst Person in the World
The Boy and The Heron
Flow
The Wild Robot
Ghostlight
Iron Claw

I’m sure there are dozens more I could name. I don’t really watch a ton of blockbuster/superhero/franchise movies anyways.

I’m Still here was incredible, as was Sing Sing. Loved Nickel Boys but was a tough viewing because of the way it was filmed. I’d put Ghostlight up there as well, The Ballad of Wallis Island. No Other Land was great as well, but more of a Doc obviously.

You named a bunch of foreign and indie films. That's the point, Hollywood makes a bunch of slop now and they rarely ever greenlight movies that don't fit into their formula of superhero/shoot em up franchises and remakes/reboots.

I mean I named a lot of A24 which is a Hollywood studio, although it certainly allows more independent creation than most. My whole point was there are great movies still being made, not just surface level blockbusters. And if you live in a city there are a ton of niche/smaller theaters to see great films. Blockbusters were never the best movies, anyways.

He was in a lot of classic films, but two of my favorites of his are Sneakers and Spy Game. Each was riveting.

I think the real limitation with A24 and indie films isn't quality, it's that they will inevitably appeal to a smaller more limited audience. I liked Wallis Island for example, but not everyone would. It's quirky and odd.

While I think there are still big movies with broad appeal, they are few and far between. Sinners was a pretty big hit. F1 was a hit. Mission Impossible for sure.

Yeah those 3 were good for sure, Weapons was good (IMO) and there are a handful of big movies coming out later this year I am excited for. There are definitely good big movies, I just think the smaller ones are often great and way more original.

My favorite was Jeremiah Johnson. Seen it countless times. Civil war vet who left the civilized world. Used to read books about the West and Mountain men as a kid. Supporting actors were very entertaining. Life in the west was terrifyingly dangerous. Bittersweet movie about life and sudden death. Photography was spectacular.

A24 is/was indie but now the the quality is going down based on the recent movies I've seen from them. I liked Sing Sing a lot but some of the other stuff I've seen recently is just terrible. I do need to watch Past Lives. Ex Machina and Moonlight were both excellent as was Lady Bird. Enemy, Hereditary, Midsommar, and Good Time were all very good.

My point is the major studios used to make great movies and it was rarely the huge blockbusters I'm talking about, those typically aren't my type of movie. Jurassic Park was great but now Hollywood is on Jurassic Park #8.

Not sure there is really such thing as a leading man anymore in the age of television and content saturation. RIP, The Natural.

Not every movie will be good. There are a handful I can recommend from the last 2 years that you hadn’t mentioned.

Anywho, as was my main point, there are great films to be found. I don’t pay attention to the Studio that releases them really, I scour the internet for trailers as well as look at various theaters for new releases I may be interested in. I rarely go to the IMAX/Regal Cinema’s of the world.

off the top of my head, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Mahershala Ali, Christian Bale, and Denzel Washington are as leading manish as any of the old timers

I think we're saying the same thing. The great movies used to be made by the major Hollywood studios and would go to Loew's/AMC, Regal, Cinerom etc. for release all around the country. Now you have to find some small independent arthouse theater.

Agreed but I don't think most people have any idea who Mahershala Ali is. I'm a big fan of his but I've seen people draw stares when I've mentioned his name. Denzel and Hanks are 70 now. I consider Leo the biggest movie star and I'm looking forward to his Paul Thomas Anderson movie. I'm also looking forward to Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth Fincher directed movie. I'm hoping those movies can get Hollywood back on track.

Of course Tom Cruise is still making Mission Impossible movies. I was a sophomore in high school when Mission Impossible came out.
