Rest in Peace, sir.

Likely just my age talking, but I don't think future generations are gonna have a Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen ... as leading men.

Probably not. They're all dead and the odds of another person being given their name and them becoming great leading actors is pretty low.

  • The proper noun is being “commonized” (turned into a common noun) to refer to a category of people or works associated with the name.
  • This is a kind of metonymy — using the name of a person to stand for the qualities or creations of that person.

I'm beginning to think AI doesn't understand attempts at humor.

Legendary leading man. RIP to one of the greats. So many wonderful films. It is sobering to watch these bigger than life characters exit the mortal plane. Need to rewatch The Sting, Three Days of the Condor, Butch and Sundance and others. Sneakers is a guilty pleasure as well.

I still remember flying home from a vaca with the family in 1979, I was 16 and Redford was on the cover of one of those "sexiest man alive" magazines. I just remember thinking, but he's 43!!!! 😉

I agree on both. It is likely our age talking....but I feel the same way. Especially when they'll counter with actors like Timothee Chalamet.
Hollywood just isn't anything like it used to be. They haven't been coming up with fresh ideas for a while now and we mostly just see remakes, formulaic shoot em up action movie franchises, and superhero stuff. Clint is 95 years old and still attempting to make original content as well as the great Scorsese who is 82. Tarantino has said he has one more movie left in him but he already scrapped that movie. Nicholson is the last truly great old school Hollywood acting star and he's been done acting for a while now. Once he passes it feels like that's the end of the golden age for Hollywood and cinema.

63 is the new 43.

Chalamet is a kid. I don't think anyone had any idea who Redford, Newman or McQueen were at that age.

Not for nothing, Chalamet is 29 and Redford did Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at 33. And you could argue, if Redford had TikTok and Instagram back then, they would have been.....Personally, I've never seen a Timothee Chamalet movie but I know who he is.

Chalamet is far closer to a sensitive superhero than badass king of cool.

3 days of the Condor, with I think Faye Dunaway, early to mid 70s. The Sting is one of my favorite movies ever, Redford, Newman, Shaw. The man had a good, and long Life for sure. I also think he supported a lot of very worthy causes throughout his Life.

He was red hulk? I could barely get through that nightmare of a movie. If they are the new avengers, the franchise is done. Florence Pugh, yes. Everyone else, absolutely no way.
I actually don't much like Florence Pugh in that role. But David Barbour is hilarious as Red Guardian. Great character.
