Seems meaningless now but I'm still pissed about the 1994 strike season. Tony was hovering around .400 but he never got the chance.

The horrors of chewing tobacco. Baseball just lost a great ambassador. I loved the fact that he went back to coaching at the college level.

Yes, very sad. Great gentleman and great spokesperson for baseball. And, much too young. Earlier story explained that Gwynn attributed cancer to years of chewing. Message for anybody out there who still doesn't get there.

Someone on the radio said he never struck out more than 40 times in a season. Today there are some that nearly do that in 100 AB's.

Great hitter and man. I remember seeing a panel discussion including Tony and Ted Williams who was a huge fan of Gwynn. Tony almost fell off his chair when Ted said that pitchers were the dumbest animals ever created. Williams was not known for diplomacy. Tony didn't argue the point but smiling he said something like no comment. RIP Tony Gwynn.

Hey, he stole 56 bases one season and 40 in another. He wasn't always so...portly.

Good stuff here:

One of the saddest bits of sports news I've ever heard. He was one of my favorite players, who possessed a beautiful swing. Had several gold gloves, 7 silver slugger awards and seemed to be one of the nicest, most down to earth superstars out there. Glad he got to be enshrined before he passed. RIP Tony.
