A linchpin (no "Y" and no hyphen) is a thing (mechanically) or a person (possibly a team member) that holds things together. Avoid linch-pin, since it is not only errant but relates too closely to the cruel practice of assassination by hanging.
It's OK to write that "MoJeff is the linchpin of the UConn offense."
