OT: Playing in a scramble today

I've played golf three times in my life - all BYC. This time, it's an end of year scramble with my colleagues.

Needless to say, I am the "D."

What are my responsibilities as the "D" player? Do I swing away, and hope a few of my shots are playable, or play conservative?

Any tips? My first goal is to win. A close second is to not embarrass myself.

Just don't play slow. Don't stand over your ball for an hour. Set up and swing. A golfer can be forgiven any sin as long as he plays at a responsible pace.

Hit your shot first and try to get it out in the middle of the fairway, even if it's not that long. This lets the bigger hitters unleash without care.

When you putt? Putt first and don't be short. Give the other 3 a good look at how the ball is going to break.

Have fun and don't be a sourpuss if you're not playing well. Scrambles, like UConn hoops, rides the Mojo and a fun foursome is the best.

Off the T you should try to get a ball in-play so the big hitters can swing for the fences… Other than that, take a lot of time on the practice green… Draining a putt or 2 will be your biggest contribution…

Another suggestion is step up and be the first putter on the green. Ask for advice from your teammates. They should give you a spot to aim for and they can learn from your putts- either the line on the putt or the speed of the putt.

Also, as the self-described "D" player, always volunteer to fetch drinks from the beer whench when she drives by. Doesn't mean you have to pay every round, but do the leg work.

basically what everyone else is saying. Don't try to nut every ball as far as you can. Take it easy and just try to put it on the fairway, or as close as you can, and try to chip as best as you can.

Always putt first as the other players can watch the break in your ball and the speed of the green.

Have fun and just contribute once in a while everyone will respect you for it.

Bring or buy the refreshments. Lots of swing oil makes the scramble worthwhile.

bring beer, cigars and keep the beers cold with lots of ice, maybe some Fireballs and then just make a putt or 2 nd stay out of the way unless you are handing beers out Tom……it would be a success then

But not all foursomes can be Team Fishy so don't shoo that high!!

I agree with the above - have fun, smile, drink and putt first. If the other players in your group are taking the game seriously drink some more and keep smiling.

Scrambles are weird .
The last scramble ,I played in I was awful .
I had four good shots.
Fortunately for my team.
I dropped a long putt on the long putt hole.
Plus two short irons on closest to the hole par threes
We won more money than the first place team

Personally I would have gone the other way... Don't be afraid to cough, sneeze, or make cell phone calls during other players' back swings (cell phone calls, at any time, the longer the better, are always appropriate). Add or subtract 15 yards from all yardage markers when asked for distance references. Always give yourself a favorable lie, including on greens, while randomly heeling others' balls into the turf. Accidently misplace a few of the other players' putters on the prior holes' greens (in the woods or a pond), and drink heavily, like drunk and disorderly heavily, beginning in the parking lot before the match. Roll and smoke the largest blunt you possibly can by yourself and mandate that only you can drive the golf cart, and at 3mph. I take it you've only played golf only 3 times b/c you really just aren't a fan. Follow my advise and no one will ever ask you to play again (wouldn't be crazy if you got fired before the back 9 though).

These are actually all things I have personally witnessed on corporate golf outings except no one got fired, although the really drunk guy was asked to stop playing and had an HR meeting the next day, and the blunt guy shared while driving hilariously slowly.

Good times! I love em, I won closes to the pin (lucky shot), won the raffle for a set of clubs. Playing alongside Company Presidents (who didn't need the money). Played on the best courses in the country (left divots like a pro, but bigger). And all for free.

It is nice to have a ringer on your team and a player that can drive for show *can't do nothing else). At the end of the day no one really remembers what happened especially when the refreshment cart is active.
