OT: Phil Martelli fired

Can't imagine he was fired because of his record. Guessing there was some other reason.

Fired a guy that's been there for almost 35 years and has 400+ wins. Damn...that's cold.

Were we ever involved with Charlie Brown?

Tough to hear. I lived in Philly for 13 years and I can tell you the man is a Philly icon with a presence larger than the St. Joe's. Notwithstanding Jay Wright, Martelli easily has the strongest name recognition within the Big 5, with ties throughout the city. Hard to believe.

The Anon account this board doesn't like just mentioned former assistant coach Kill as a possibility here.

Could be his record...
41-55 the last three seasons. 10th in the A10 this season....One postseason in 5 years.

Maybe he's burned out on recruiting etc. after so many years? It's not exactly the best job in the A10, I don't know how they do better.

Well, he will always be remembered for that undefeated regular season, 27-0, in 2004 followed by a run to the elite 8. That was fun.

Thanks for the wonderful memories in 2014 too!

They do have a 6'7 forward that averaged 19/6 this year and who went to St. Thomas Moore.
He'd have to sit out a year though. Not sure we'll be in the market for players that need to sit one

Not since he walked in the gym cool and slow. Then called Glen Miller "Daddy-O".

That Charlie Brown? He's a clown.
He can paint my face and spray me with seltzer if he comes here with his 19ppg and 7rpg

I'm surprised after seeing Mickie K, Chief, and Jordan tears that nobody's posted Phil's grandson from 2014.
Have we turned the corner and started going high?

Geno is not going to be happy - his very close friend from Philly days along with Harry Parretta
Ive spoken to the man many times and sat adjacent to him at Geno's daughters wedding so we BS'd a lot
Placed Geno's son on his St Joe's team - even though he transferred out
Nice guy and very funny and nice family
He coached some nice teams and players
Too bad but he will end up OK
Best of luck PM

Good news for Martelli: He's been hired to join Juwan Howard's staff at Michigan. Good landing spot for him and smart move by Michigan getting a vet like Martelli to mentor Howard.

On the other hand, Saint Joseph's currently have 7 players on scholarship, three of which played on the team last season. Billy Lange has his hands full, but I am curious how he tries to rebuild the program.

Seems like a smart move by Howard.

And the Rock Star saw what happened here with a former NBA/former hometown team/player/coach and said "you know, Juwann, it might be good to get yourself an experienced coach to show you how to run a program."
If this hire fails, the Rock Star might be working at Rock Auto........
