Paterno says he was refused interviews for the head coaching positions at, among others, University of Connecticut and James Madison University despite having worked at both as an assistant earlier in his career.

Seems reasonable. Yes, it's unfair for Jay Paterno to bear the sins of the father, but the residue of that horrific story (the worst in CFB history) is simply something other schools want to avoid.

The biggest reason Paterno got no interviews is that he was an awful coach. The only reason he had a respectable job at all was his last name.

Paterno's time at UConn was a generation ago. His time away from the school can now legally drink. I don't know if he was or was not a good coach. I do know that that he was never more than a position coach. Typically, someone needs to be an accomplished defensive or offensive coordinator to get a shot. Manuel more or less said that he wasn't interested in candidates without at least coordinator experience.

I think UConn had four candidates in mind and everyone else was a fall back (1a. Diaco, 1b. Narduzzi, then Pete Lembo and Dave Clawson in some order.) T.J. Weist was no higher than No.5 on their list, but Manuel would have put in a good word to return as Offensive Coordinator with the new coach if he desired (He did not. Wants to be a head coach.).

Not a good coach, period.
