Bad call, yes. But you can see how the umpire could have missed it based on where he was positioned - the first baseman stretched straight towards him so he essentially has to look through him to see the bag. (the umpire also tends to watch the runner's foot while listening for the sound of the ball hitting the glove).

I don't know enough about umpiring technique to know whether he was positioned in the wrong place.

At the post game presser, Welke admitted he umpires horseshoes leagues in the off season.

That is classic!! I saw Mattingly going nuts. He should have pulled a Earl Weaver and ripped up the rule book right there on the spot.

as bad as the call was, welke's position on the play was easily as questionable.
