Former Wisconsin DB Xavier Lucas leaving school for Miami without entering transfer portal in a groundbreaking move

Kid signed a revenue sharing agreement with Wisconsin, asked to transfer because of a family illness, Wisconsin refused to allow him into the portal because of the revenue sharing agreement, so the kid dropped out and enrolled at Miami.

The real key here is at that the NCAA said "“NCAA rules do not prevent a student-athlete from unenrolling from an institution, enrolling at a new institution and competing immediately."

So -- why exactly do we have a transfer portal? And why exactly do we have an NCAA?

Meanwhile Wisconsin has the NIL rights to the kid who is going to get paid to play in Miami.

We can agree to disagree. I probably should have qualified my statement by saying as a True Freshman he showed some pretty good skills. He had a decent arm and I thought pretty accurate. He also was fast when he ran although not as elusive as we would have liked. As you may remembered our receiver group was hit hard by injuries that year. One of the starters for most of the year was a walk on. I didn’t think he should replace Roberson after Roberson slow start on 2023 but many here did. Going through his reads in real time was definitely holding him back. Maybe, Zion will not do any better at Marshall but some players do develop after their freshman year. We shall see.

Interesting. So for 20 years, we’ve heard that the reason UConn isn’t in the ACC is because of hard feelings from litigation. So is Miami killing their chances to ever get out of the ACC, because their only entry to a Big 2 is through the Big Ten, not the SEC.

I would imagine that all gets resolved, but it's the transfer portal part that I really wonder about. Is this going to mean that a kid can leave at any time to go to another school?

Technically the contract issue is between Wisconsin and the ncaa. As far as the courts care, it's likely legal

How is it between the school and the NCAA? None of it has even been approved to go into effect yet, right? I honestly don't know, so that is why I am sort of curious to see how it plays out.

Because it's an ncaa violation which has its own rules, ones that don't involve a federal court. Lack of NCAA permission doesn't invalidate the contract

I guess Wisconsin could get some flak for not entering the kid into the portal, but this so called contract probably won't result in anything for either side. Maybe when the revenue sharing goes live these agreements can become a thing, although player agents and reps will probably want them modified somehow.
