OT - New London, Uncasville, Norwich area

LOL on the Boardwalk! It is soon to be renamed the Niantic Bay Overlook since the reconstruction took away the only boards on the walk! Reconstruction is supposed to be finished this month. Nice walk overlooking the ocean (and the Nuke plant...)and the weather recently has been great!
The village of Niantic is cute dressed up for Christmas as is the Old Mystic shopping area. I enjoy the sub museum and Harkness Park & mansion, next to the O'Neil house is nice in nice weather. A little farther Gillette "Castle" is interesting too, but check for hours out of season.
 
Just above the electric boat facility of General Dynamics is an awesome location. Fort Griswald. One amazing story. Actually quite unique in Revolutionary war history. It is the site of the 1781 massacre led by the traitorous Benedict Arnold. I guess it's a good historical tale about trusting an enemies intentions and thinking they will be compassionate in victory. An unmatched location in the United States. IMO

Actually, the LSU game is at the XL Center in Hartford - an even longer drive.

It probably takes 5 minutes longer, but I always liked being able to take highways to XL Center vs the feeling of driving through backroads to Storrs.

Of course I'm always happy when the team is playing at Mohegan Sun. A very pleasant driving and parking situation all-around.

Waterford Beach, just after Sandy. Storm surge almost created a breach cutting the beach in two. The reconstruction has been amazing, and the beach is a gem, and right at the end of New London where it meets Long Island Sound/Atlantic Ocean. I try not to miss a day, year-round. Maybe a swim (dip) tomorrow.

Bluff Point in Groton, on the eastern side of the Thames River is another great walk. Was just there twice this week!

I didn't think a visit to the beach was going to be an option in December, but as warm as it's been, it just might be in the cards! Before I head to Connecticut I'm going to our WBB game vs. East Carolina in Myrtle Beach, so I know I'll get some beach time there.
 
If you're going to be in Foxwoods, there are a few good restaurants:

1. Craftsteak at mgm grand- as fine a steakhouse as you'll find in Connecticut.
2. Red Lantern- pan-Asian fare in a spectacular setting. Cool place.
3. Alta strada- overpriced for what it is, but speaking of brunch buffet in this thread, AS has an excellent one on Sundays. David Burke Prime used to have a spectacular buffet, best in Connecticut even, but I think dbp stopped doing it.

Sounds good, but when I'm in my favorite part of the country, I like good old New England seafood!

Good luck finding the restaurants, we were there 2 weeks ago,and looking for someplace to eat was like trying to find your way thru a maze. No maps, no employee knew where the restaurants were located, they are not conviently located fairly close to one another like Mohegan is, plus there are 3 floors at Foxwoods. After roaming around for 1 1/2 hours we finally found a sit down restaurant,on the 3rd floor, I think. Wow that place is huge and you better remember where you parked your car.

Go to Mohegan, it's 8 miles from Foxwoods . Go 95 south, to 395 exit 78a. It is .well marked. Go to the Sky area or valet park in the Sky or hotel parking lot.

Mohegan Sun is actually exit 9 off 395 now. They've renumbered the exits based on mileage.

Another example of efficient spending of the taxpayer's dollar. Not only the cost of the new exit signs but they also made new "old exit XX" signs.

There really isn't mostly because there's no people in that part of the state. If you're going to come this far north for a trip, Boston or NYC are way better options.

Yeah it's kind of dumb, but I think the state was forced to do it. They said on the news something about it being compliant with federal highway standards and Connecticut is one of the last states to switch over.

I'm going there for the USC/St. John's MBB game. I'm going to NYC for a few days before going home.

Just like so many other historical events, especially in war, it's not that simple. Read the British version for a different perspective. While there is no doubt that a massacre took place after the surrender for the British many felt it was justified.

For those unfamiliar with the Battle of Groton heights, there are two differing versions. The Brits say the Americans struck their colors and when the Brits exposed themselves for the surrender the Americans opened fire inflicting heavy casualties. The Americans say they never struck. The colors fell from a cannon shot. All this after the Americans refused to surrender (twice) despite a British warning of no quarter. The upshot is that according to the American version, Colonel William Ledyard surrendered his sword to a British officer who promptly skewered him with it. In the case of Ledyard I suspect the American version is true.

I had an ancestor there. He got to experience the thrilling the wagon ride down the hill.After the fight the Brits loaded a large wagon with American wounded and attempted to pull it downhill to a house that had been converted to an aid station. They loss control and the wagon careened a couple hundred yards down the hill undoubtedly adding to the misery of the wounded.
 
Having family in the Rev war, the name Ledyard is regarded as a synonym for foolish. He could have easily run and fought again.
You are probably right in assuming the American version is correct when it describes Ledyard taking the sharp point of his own sword.
War is hell.

Yeah, all those tourists that are welcomed, stay in our area every year is a figment of our imaginations. NY and Boston are easy day trips too. A H

From Old Lyme to Stonington, there are maybe 100k people. It's deadsville. I think 100% of my graduating class which had <80 kids, moved to Newport, Boston, or NY.
