Hearsay is a tricky thing. It think it is important to remember that in 1976, Sandusky was a nobody. It's why the idea of an entire, program, university, city, judiciary, state was covering up for him for 40 plus years is hard to process.

We know of two formal investigations neither produced an arrest, unless you count his eventual arrest, but I doubt those were ongoing for that long.

To date we have one third party person on record as saying I told Joe I saw this. That was in 2002, and it was reported. It appears there is more to this case, but I don't have a clue how you can prove who knew what, when, and to what degree.

To me the most mind boggling thing is how he could have been investigated by the DA, who later became governor, and come up empty. Sandusky never struck me as a clever man in the interviewa he gave. Did someone squash a DA investigation? Could a FB coach actually do that? If there is evidence of that, then we are talking a historic abuse of misplaced power.

I'm not surprised that Sandusky had 40 years of victims, but I'm having a hard time connecting that to bystanders solely through a civil money grab case.

I just spent part of my lunch reading the testimony of JD 150 published by the NYT. Not only isn't it a smoking gun, it is a poor attempt at greenmail.

The guy probably was molested by JS as he described, JS slipped him a finger while he was with a group of boys in the shower. No way to prove it, but given JS, let's take that as true in 1976.

There are a number of problems in the testimony published.

The complaint was filed in 2014, so the dude is in his 52 and here's what put me off. Other than the two sentence description of his abuse, the only thing he can remember with any clarity is a brief hallway encounter with Paterno.

Even when lead by the attorney in yes/no fashion he can provide no additional details on the number of other kids, adults, coaches he allegedly told. He may be telling the absolute truth, but as a witness it isn't worth much. Certainly not worth the media coverage.

The other interesting thing is the suit is PSU against their insurance company. So, investigations into the actual crimes here is going to be peripheral at best.

I realize I'm coming off an apologist here but the truth is difficult to come by these days and I detest mob rules. Paterno is dead and I don't care all that much about his legacy or his statue, but this kind of stuff happens to the living. Richard Jewel comes immediately to mind, the USA fraternity is a more recent one.

Sandusky is a convicted monster whose crimes we can only estimate. I'd like to be a bit more careful piling that garbage on other people. It's not a certainty that people around the situation knew what we now know.

When I was growing up (13/14) a female friend was in a "relationship" with one of our teachers. This didn't come to light until years after we'd graduated. He was arrested and convicted of abusing other young girls.

I had no idea. She was my friend and he was one of my teachers who I actually liked. When I found out years later, I racked my brain trying to figure out if I missed something, some sort of signal or outright plea for help.

The only thing I could think of wad that she made a comment on how nerdy/goofy the teacher was. Not a lot to go on.

In a separste story, a relative when to Vegas for conference with three of his coworkers. They'd worked together for years. During the weekend one guy separates from the group the night before they leave and isn't heard from again. Doesn't show up at the airport. The next day they find out he set up some underage Internet hookup and got himself Chris Hansen'd by the local PD. Guy has been in jail since. His coworkers had no idea.

This stuff isn't easy to pick up on in real time.

Very different than the Sandusky/PSU scenario, where you guy with multiple instances of (minimally) questionable activity with young boys, access to vulnerable young boys, and unlimited access to PSU facilities for decades.

Hindsight is 20/20 but this isn't your 14 year old friend telling you that a teacher is weird.

I remember getting into a weird discussion about PSU football with the women's hoopsters around here a while back when Sandusky was arrested and Paterno croaked and the Emmert sanctioned PSU.

Part of that discussion was trying to convey how well known Sandusky was, and that the rumors of him diddling little boys were around since for me - the 80s, and apparently for others - the stories were around longer than that.

Just a sad commentary on humanity - all of it.

I'm ready for a healthy football program that can both tackle - and block - to take the football field for UCONN in a matter of weeks now.
