Captial Grill, On20, or Firebox. All are very expensive. Vaughan's if you want a pub type joint.

This expert pizza review website helped me out a lot a little while ago:

I'm a fan of Bin 228. A bit more informal than the more expensive ones mentioned above, but nice, small, low-key and I've always had good, attentive service (and they remember stuff from visit to visit, which, as an out-of-towner, is impressive to me). Nothing earth-shattering, but nice wine list and lots of small plate type choices that can be fun for a date night. 99% of the time when I am there for lunch I get the "meatball salad," which is not on the menu, but so many people order it that they know what you're talking about when you ask for it (exactly what it sounds like, meatballs on a salad--arugula iirc--with toast points). Fondue is good and fun, too.

If you want something with more of a downtown buzz (to the extent Hartford has one), I've also had good meals at Max Downtown, Salute and Feng Asian Bistro if you like sushi.

If you're ok with spending some money on white table cloths, it's Max Downtown or Capital Grill.

Also, some great sushi/japanese at Feng

For great mid-priced food I'd do Dish for american,Sorella for wood fired pizza and pasta or Salute for pasta.

For lower end funky I'd do Black Eyed Sally's barbecue/cajun. they have live jazz on Monday nights.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. We had planned to eat at Max's, but we drove by Bears's smoke house and since we both love good BBQ, after checking out some online reviews for Bear's, we took a chance and we were not disappointed. As someone who has eaten good BBQ all over the country, I feel like my standards are pretty high and this place measured up.

I also continue to be amazed at how much campus changes every time I go back. The old days of sneaking into Gampel and watching scrimmages are apparently long gone. With the security key card locked doors you can't get into the new practice facility. Was kind of disappointed.

Go Huskies!

Bear's is solid BBQ. Great quality and great concept. I like but don't love whatever they use for smoke; I prefer the flavor of the BBQ at Taino in Middletown, but they are both solid choices for CT BBQ.

bears is fantastic bbq , but i'm usually hit when i eat that. Dish (main st) and trumbell kitchen are two places i would consider, also pretty much next door to TK is Salute a very good italian spot.

I hate not being able to swing in and see the "captains" practices, loved taking a chance on the way back from Boston/Worcester or just driving up there with my son. Does suck I agree.
