As a Nebraska fan that's followed this very closely since the day Eichorst was hired:
A LOT of people in both the state and the BOR were not happy with Eichorst and the way he handled the Bo Pelini situation. He wound up framing Bo as the bad guy for essentially cussing him out behind closed doors when he was fired but Bo was 100% correct- Eichorst was a coward. Refusing to speak to media, refusing to meet with coaches, etc.
The Mike Riley hire was made completely by Eichorst. One man decision. He was more concerned with hiring the anti-Pelini personality wise than he was with hiring the best available football coach. Truth be told in every coaching search (except maybe Pelini's) it's felt like Nebraska has done this. Can't win with Frank Solich? Look to Bill Callahan. Horrible D under Callahan? Hire Bo Pelini. Pelini is a jerk? Hire the nicest coach in football.
Fans are done with HCMR. This essentially feels like the make or break period for Nebraska football moving forward. Now that UNL has a full share of B1G revenues and boosters are ready to step up, Nebraska needs to flex its financial muscle and go get itself a real coach. It finally feels like Nebraska is going to start playing with the big boys financially. The recruiting budget is the highest in the B1G currently (and its not just because of location- Nebraska has increased their staff and investment in this area tremendously the past few years) and the analyst/support area is growing as well.
Nobody in Lincoln or anywhere in the state expects for Nebraska to consistently replicate the 90's. But there is no reason with the infrastructure and financial strengths Nebraska has that it can't be at least Wisconsin level on a consistent basis, occasionally achieving more. If Nebraska is finally willing to open up the check book and put its full fledged support behind whoever the next HC is, there is no reason the Huskers cannot be the class of the Big Ten West moving forward.
As far as the next AD- I'd say the favorite in the clubhouse is Trev Alberts. He's currently the AD at Nebraska-Omaha and played football at UNL. Last go round there were rumors Nebraska approached Barry Alvarez but wasn't willing to spend the $ to get him out of Wisconsin. This was under a different chancellor and regime. Ronnie Green seems like he means business. Hopefully he makes the right hires. I'm a believer that college football is better when traditional powers like Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, USC, etc are good. There are plenty of examples of teams going through dry stretches before turning it around. With the proper level of commitment- there's no reason Nebraska can't be one of them as well.
