Saw a banner ad on the BY about EA Sport's release of the NCAA 14 video game. Denard Robinson is on the cover.

Does he get paid for the use of his image now that he's out of school? Or does the NCAA own his collegiate persona?

He got a deal with EA Sports to use his image.

NCAA doesn't own anything.

Does Michigan get a small piece because of the trademarked uni?

That's managed through CLC(Collegiate Licensing Company), which is a subsidiary of IMG. They manage the licensing fees of official gear and uniforms of almost all of college sports teams and divvy up the royalties back to the schools...there's a few holdouts that either manage it themselves or use another company. They publish a ranking of royalties that you can look up if you're interested.

He did? Isn't that the point of the O'Bannon lawsuit and why the game ends after this edition?

Only the NCAA goes away, not the colleges. I heard there are like 200 colleges licensed to EA via other agencies.

The game will continue with 200 non-NCAA affiliated teams?

I'm wondering if my 1977-1982 neighborhood tackle football team could slip into a spot. We used to CRUSH anyone within a 45-minute bike ride. Our practices consisted of nothing but full contact kill the carrier until someone broke something, was bleeding so fast we all grabbed our bikes and left or it was dinner time.

Ah the memories. Like the time we all met at the high school (Mills) to play and one guy showed up aready in an arm cast...

The NCAA logo and the branding "NCAA Football" will go away - not the license deals with the actual schools to use their logos, uniforms, stadiums, etc. That's managed by CLC and the actual schools.

Denard graduated, which made him (and other graduating players) eligible to cut personal licensing deals.

The O'Bannon lawsuit covers the fact that the games have 'generic' no-name characters but are obviously designed from real players likeness and can be easily name-changed to be pretty close to the real thing - and it's not clear if EA is allowed to do that or not. CLC and EA are co-defendants in the lawsuit but I think NCAA and CLC will shoulder most of the blame if they lose since EA got their approval before releasing the games.
