I will admit I don’t follow the NBA that closely I think it’s just an awful brand of basketball. But these contracts just seem ABSURD. Can someone explain to me how a guy that averaged less than 8 ppg gets a 3 year deal worth $87 million?? Is it not all guaranteed? That seems like the worst deal in the history of sports.

If you think the players are making big money look at what the owners are pulling in
Exactly, it’s all relative. League/owners are bringing in $$$$, so even the “worst/least productive” players are getting paid

It's not the 70's anymore. It's OK for players to get paid.

I think NBA players, via their players union, get around 50% of league revenue as their salary cap. When the league does better, the players do better

50 players on an NFL roster, 25 players on an MLB roster, 15 on an NBA roster. Less people to spread the money across

An employee never makes more than 'The Boss'. Plus to owners, players are simply assets to be used for entertainment purposes to increase ownership product value.

But the corporation does pay damn good, if you can get hired. No degree or formal education required either.

Yes, I get that. But $29 mil/per for a guy that scores 8ppg?? Really??

As a starter (49 games), he averaged 9 ppg, 9 rpg, 3 apg, 2.5 s+b/g, and shot 66% from the field. He's a starting center in the NBA. Tatum's final year will pay him over $70M. Everything's relative. It's a lot of money for Hartenstein but OKC's not dumb.

Keep in mind there are only 450 NBA players. MLB has more than twice that. 1,700 NFL players (with much fewer games and much greater risk of injury).

Andre Jackson averaged 6.7 points during the 2022-2023 season for us, yet he was one of the most valuable players in the country and without him there's a good chance we don't win it all that year.

Who's also a top-6 rim protector in the league, who has the top steal % among centers, who is an elite screener, and whose team was 11 ppg better with him on the court last year than they were with him off despite having another center (Mitchell Robinson) who produces superior boxscore stats.

The smartest front offices have come to understand the value in micro-skills like screen setting, defensive scheme flexibility (Hartenstein can play at the nail or in drop, and can even switch a little bit), boxing out, decision-making on the short roll, cutting, etc.

For an excellent team, guys who do all of the above at an elite level -- which Hartenstein does -- are way more valuable than just adding raw points.

Look at how integral Draymond was for a decade for one of the great dynasties in league history. He was never much of a scorer!

Great country

Now you get it.
Glad to see bronny earned his place on lakers and gets guaranteed contract because he was a non factor in college. Lebron the gaslighter. Hurley dodged a bullet. Wasted roster spot and money. Do they think we are all in a coma?

I see LeBron did his "1 year deal" thing again. Is he really worth the trouble anymore?
Unless the Lakers are going to swap him with another superstar (there aren't any left this offseason) or want to go full on rebuild (they have 1 first round pick total in the next 3 years), then yeah definitely still worth the trouble

He's a dinosaur, but a dinosaur that just averaged 26/8/7 on >50% FG and >40% 3P in over 70 games

Maybe it’s his rebounding and defense skills that make it worth it for the team.

lebron goes from allegedly wanting a team friendly deal to getting a 2 year max. He’s so full of S. Clown show organization but they’ll get a lot of sports center and social media love with the bronny to Lebron assists

I'm not a Bron hater by any means, but the media narratives surrounding Kobe's final contract and years vs the (bleep) show going on with the Lakers are wildly different. Kobe was being called selfish for taking a 2 year/$48M contract and how nobody wanted to play with him, meanwhile Bron got his podcast buddy hired as head coach and his non-NBA player son a guaranteed roster spot and you got ESPN trying to sell us on Bronny's attributes and how nepotism is everywhere so who cares.

All while he has his buddies running a coordinated hit piece to try and cr@p on Jordan's legacy.

How are the talking heads trying to spin it with news of his new max contract now that it came out? They all spent weeks saying Lebron was taking a pay cut to lure talent to LA.

I think both things are true.
